Does any Ivy league school need Viola players?

i gotta add... anyone who plays the violin decently could pick up the viola very quickly, considering most viola parts are easier in orchestral compositions

"Pick up" in the sense of "make noise on", yes, but the viola really does require some very different physical processes than the violin, in terms of bow weight, vibrato, and intonation. Don't give up violin for viola unless you really mean it-- better to be one of many good violinists than one of many bad violists.

As a violist, violinist, and a pianist, I've found that violas are much more sought after in orchestras, which is probably also true at the college level. If you look at GBYSO, the #2 youth orchestra in the country, the audition repertoire for violas is at a much much lower level than that for violins and cellos. Basses are sort of like violas in that they're rare, but not so many are needed.

I hate orchestra and the pretentious kids and I quit, except for colleges sake when I record my tapes. I think it's interesting that in MA, the All-State cutoff for violas was a full 15 points higher than that for violins...

Now when you say your "hot", how hot are you? Are we talking all-county? Are we talking all-state? Are we talking julliard material?

i play soprano, alto and tenor sax (but no bari ;()
