It was a very competitive year and it is just getting worst. So how is one to know what happened in any admissions process. I posted about a WSJ article that provided the data that rejections are at record rate and kids, parents, and guidance people need to be getting more realistic about their chances.

I think it is getting much harder to base potential acceptances off past historical data results.

i feel soooo screwed over. it's just so unfair. i didn't get into two top colleges that i really love while three kids at my school ( two who aren't as qualified ) got in. the thing is they don't even care.

it sucks to hear ppl bragging about their acceptances nonchalently and talking about how they're not going anyways.
i mean those are my dream schools that i would give anything to go to.
i got into great schools but they're just not where i want to be.

my advice for future applicants is to make sure u like ALL the schools on ur list b/c you may end up there.

Some schools, like UCLA, chose their students in a very strange manner this year. So someone with a 4.0/2400 may have been rejected, while someone with a 3.6/2000 would have been accepted. shrugs The bottom line is that you'll be happy wherever you go, so long as you make the most of it. :D Don't let the "What If's" ruin your college experience.

this thread is making want to apply early decision to a less competitive school (nyu stern) that i'd be happy with and forget about applying to my dream school (wharton), where id be slightly more happy at

I really thought I had Northwestern.. SAT was a little low, 2110, but I have a 4.0 unweighted GPA and am the valedictorian of my class. What happened with NU admissions this year??

Master, that is DEFINITELY the way to go. You could also try ED'ing to Penn CAS and attempting to get a dual degree at Wharton which is possible.

yeah I got waitlisted at Northwestern but my SATs were lower than yours (2070) though my extracurriculars are stellar (and bonus points for living outside of the States)

sarmiento, I actually applied from overseas as well. I'm an American citizen but I go to an International school in Indonesia.. I really thought that would be an advantage for me, but I guess not. I only had 2 extra currics tho, although I dedicated ALOT of time to them... Sigh.. Now I firmly believe in the arbitrary nature of college admissions..

I agree. Especially with the statements about watching those who partied while you worked on weekends now celebrate their acceptances while you deal with failing expectations. I also was disappointed to only get into schools that I could've gotten into with like 3/4 as much effort and work as I did do. My sanity pretty much depends on getting in off of the waitlists that I'm on.

Bishounen -
really? no berkley? that totally sucks! my friend got in with a lower SAT score...and she has no EC whatsoever. it seems like your academic scores are good so im surprise berkeley rejected you. as for ucla, academics is important...but they started rejecting well-qualified kids with good grades.

anyways...you should appeal? its worth a try

screwed..yeah.. I was screwed...a Canadian living in China, self studied and got 2190 on SAT I, doing IBDP, applied to like 16 schools, waitlisted at Wellesley, Barnard and Carleton, accepted at Grinnell, Hamilton, and yeah, screwed at the rest.

Applied to six schools, accepted at one. I love the school I'm going to (Caltech), but it still feels a bit awful and screwed-over-y. Admissions for international students == truly insane.
