Does anyone feel like they're going to love college to much to want to study abroad?

College is just four years, and students can always travel abroad later. A perfect solution would be to take a gap year, but then there are financial limitations if a student doesn't have support from his/her parents.

yeaa I’m having the same issue. And I’m going to be a transfer which means I’ve already missed out on a whole year with my future classmates.
But the problem with me and taking a gap year is that I want to be a doctor s time is of the essence.

Aren’t most study abroad programs the same cost (or less) as a year/semester at your school? As in it pays for housing and classes? Because if so then it’s a lot better to do it now when you’re still young and your only obligations will be studying and enjoying the place you’re in. You’d be paying no matter what, might as well go on a vacation.

^I really dont think this is about the cost… They just feel as if they’ll miss out on some stuff that happens in college. When you go abroad you can’t take your friends with you(not all of them anyway), so it’s like you’ll be missing out on events on the campus.

That’s true… but all of my friends who have gone abroad (either in high school or college) have absolutely loved it and never regretted it for a second. You make new friends over there, and have a hell of a lot of fun.

I mean, your school’s still going to be there when you come back, as will your friends (unless they weren’t really your friends). You might miss out on events on campus, but people on campus will miss out on the crazy stuff you’ll be doing abroad.

Another plus: the drinking age pretty much everywhere except the USA and Middle Eastern countries (ironic eh?) is 18. No more drinking crappy Keystone and Natty.

Less to do with the drinking age than the size of the wallet. :)

I cannot study abroad due to my having to take dental school classes at the same time, due to my being in an accelerated program. It was areally tough decision to make (extra year of schooling vs. being abroad), but I feel like its the right choice in terms of my long term career goals (I could really have only studied abroad a semester anyways). I still think I will regret not studying abroad, but I think in the long term, it will be more beneficial to not study abroad.

I could always study abroad in the summer anyways, so I don’t feel like I will miss out on it too much.

I’m sure college will be a blast, though study abroad would be nice as well. I personally would probably have less of a schedule during the summer and probably would opt for study abroad then.

the funny thing is, what we call import beers here would be domestic ‘over there’ (assuming you go to europe), so it’s probably a bit cheaper :P

At my school over half of the students study abroad during their sophomore year, so those that don’t go anywhere are more likely to feel like they’re missing, rather than those who travel.

you can go in the summer

I’ve been thinking the same thing. In some respects is kinda ruins part of the whole college experience. Not that I have a lot of interest in it, but I’d do it in the summer if I had to.

i have two years of “real” college due to transferring from a CC, so i’m gonna stay there both years

Highly depends. If you’re going just to go to college for the semester, then sometimes it will cost the same, sometimes it will be more and sometimes less.

OP, you don’t have to do a full semester or year abroad. I am studying abroad in May and June for 8 weeks. We’re going to school for 4 weeks (intensive Spanish school) and then going to work on community projects and the last week is a regroup. 11 credits, so nearly a full semester. You could do something like this and not miss any college time.

Actually I’m just the opposite. As much as I like my college and would really miss my friends, I’m an independent person and I love new experiences…I’m already a little bored with my surroundings - on to the next thing haha. Not sure if I’ll have time to travel abroad with my major, but I wish…People who come back from it feel more fulfilled and seem to have a better idea of what they want. I need that lol.

I LOVE college and my friends…although I am an extremely independent person, I have gotten extremely close with my college friends and don’t think I could leave my friends for an entire semester let alone a year - i’d feel like I missed out on too much, especially since I love college and nearly everything about it. However, I will gladly study abroad during the summer when everyone is in different place (and that is what I am doing this summer!)
