Does anyone know about credits transfer to a music school?

I am currently taking some classes at a community college, and I am wondering how these credits will transfer to the the music program I am going into. I have already spoken to a bunch of people at CCM, and noone so far seemed to know for sure. Is there a difference between academic electives and just electives? Because in the requirements for the guitar program, it says a certain number of academic electives required, and then a certain number of electives required. I am currently taking an english class, which I am pretty sure will transfer to a direct equivalent, and an art and a music class. Does anyone have knowledge of this?

It varies from school to school. Your best bet is to contact someone at your new school and tell them what classes you have taken. Be sure to talk to someone in the music dept. as well. Send your transcripts as soon as possible so they can examine them and you'll have an idea what courses will transfer for credit. I can tell you my experience (it was years ago, however). I was a music major at a two-year college and they had an excellent program. The music history professor was the best teacher I have ever had in my entire life. When I transferred to the state university to complete my music major, they made me take the entire year of music history over again, even though the course at city college was by far much more challenging and thorough. I did test out of theory...and the theory teacher at the state school was horrible. Except for my piano professor, I had much better teachers at the community college. Regarding academic courses: most general classes should transfer, no problem, i.e. English, U.S. History, foreign languages, etc. Since CCM is a conservatory, it is unlikely that they will require very many non-music classes to graduate. Check their curriculum on their website.

Not only will the new school want transcripts but often they ask for course descriptions from the Bulletin. This helps them to determine which of their courses are comparable.

Most music schools will not grant transfer credit for required classes in music, although some may let you test into more advanced classes for theory and ear training. Keep asking questions until you find the person who actually makes the decision whether or not you can transfer any of your credits.
