I can't find much about Rhodes. Can anyone clue me in? How would it compare to Furman or Rhodes. Interested in sciences/math/pre-engineering.

My son is hesitant with the huge weed out engineering at Tech. He also loves science and maybe pre-med. Are these schools good for these? (also considering William and Mary and Wake (but waaayy too expensive) Thanks.

Contact a poster named Curmudgeon, whose D went to Rhodes and now is going to, I believe (though I’m not sure), Yale Med School. He would be more than happy to talk to you.

I went to Rhodes and after a while came back to work there.

The sciences are great, particularly biology, chemistry, and physics. Math is pretty good, though there are not many majors. There is no specific pre-engineering track, but there is a 3/2 program with WUSTL. You could either major in something like math, physics, computer science, chemistry, etc. and then go on to a master’s in engineering or do the 3/2.

The pre-med advising is fantastic. Contact Prof. Alan Jaslow at Rhodes for more info on that. There’s no “gatekeeping”, meaning he’ll help all comers. We have great success with our students getting into med school (as well as grad/prof schools of all types).

I know a couple of staffers at Furman who give me a great deal of confidence in that school. I think it, like Rhodes, would help your son get a fine start to any career he’s interested in. The great thing about a LAC is that your son will get a lot of opportunity to study broadly and find out what he’s really interested in. The great thing about Rhodes is that it’s in Memphis and has service, research and internship connections that can’t be matched at most LACs.

I’m afraid I don’t know anything about Elon other than it’s in NC and it’s name evokes something vaguely British.

I live in Memphis and Rhodes has a great science department. They have internships at St. Jude and have a great Physics program. They recently spent time with NASA. Furman is also a great school but I got a friend going there and he says it is very, VERY preppy. He said “the guys where ties half the time and it’s nothing to see a girl driving a $50k BMW with pearls and high heels on.”

All are good schools. Elon is likely to let you explore a little more, until you see exactly where you fit in the Med/Eng World. Elon is one of the few undergrad schools with a cadaver lab, actively promotes student research, but only has a 3/2 Eng program. You will get as much Prof/Student interaction as you want.

In the FYI dept: Elon is the Hebrew word for “Oak” and I guess that might sound vaguely British ?!?

Academics: Elon is less science-y and more strongly pre-professional (good programs in communications, business, and education) than the others. About 7% of its students major in the sciences, compared to 15% at Furman and 21% at Rhodes. This is a good or bad thing, depending on how you view things.

Campus: Tough call. Rhodes has the nicest architecture, but Furman has the best landscaping. All three have gorgeous campuses.

Campus climate: Furman leans slightly right of center; Elon and Rhodes are fairly moderate.

Diversity: 80+% white at all three. Not a big difference in socioeconomic diversity either.

Location: Rhodes is in Memphis, a major city with a zoo, art museum, and other attractions located within walking distance. Farther away, you have things like St. Jude. Burlington and Greenville are decent cities but not as interesting.

Size: Elon is a small university. Rhodes is roughly the size of a high school. Furman falls somewhere in between.

Weather: Elon has cool winters, warm summers, and fairly mild weather overall. Weather in Memphis is more volatile and tends to run to extremes. I haven’t lived in SC so can’t comment on Furman.

Like the others, I was very favorably impressed by Rhodes. I recently visited a friend there and was blown away - beautiful campus, gorgeous facilities, and extremely friendly students. I attended Duke and am also very familiar with the science facilities at UNC, Wake, and Davidson - Rhodes does VERY well for its size.
