Hey y’all. I’m accepting my offer to Virginia Tech as a cadet and I’ve read in the email sent by the Corps that they have a string quartet. I don’t play any band instruments, but I am a fairly accomplished cellist and I don’t want to just quit my cello after seven years. Also, the potential scholarship money is very nice. I was wondering if anyone knew anything about it?
I can’t find anything online about them and I have to admit I’m a little afraid to just ask the man in charge of the Highty Tighties at orientation if there is an audition process I need to go through, if it even exists, are freshmen allowed, etc. Does anyone know anyone in it? Have any insight? Should I just email him?
Our regimental band is one of the finest marching
bands in the country and performs at national
events such as the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day
Parade; the Washington, D.C., Cherry Blossom
Festival; and the Savannah St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
There is also a jazz band, a pep bad, a brass quintet,
a string quartet, buglers, and more.
Prospective Highty-Tighties can meet with our
band director during orientation. We will have
instruments available, but you are welcome to
bring your own.
All Highty-Tighties live together as a company in
the Corps, and you will earn academic credit for
each semester with the band. Our alumni provide a $1,000 stipend to up to 60 first-year cadets.
For details, see vtcc.vt.edu/band.html or contact Senior Chief James Bean at 540-231-3296 or jbean88@vt.edu.
