The school sounds amazing, but the workload sounds very heavy. I wonder how a child who processes languages and reads slowly will do there? Does anyone know if it is a supportive environment for students with documented learning differences?
My daughter is a first-year at Mount Holyoke, and her roommate is dyslexic and has been VERY happy with the high levels of support and accomodations that the college has given to her. She’s doing very well as a result!
@smcirish What type of support and accommodation does the student receive?
I can ask my daughter. I believe double time on tests (she’s a science major). I will try to find out more!
Hi! I’m a Fellow (student leader) in our AccessAbility office at Mount Holyoke! I can suggest some things I know of, but most of my work is with physical disabilities, so I will check with another fellow for more specific information on learning disabilities. There are MANY students here with learning disabilities of various sorts, and many of them do quite well here. Our AccessAbility services is incredible at providing support. Once registered with the office (https://www.mtholyoke.edu/accessability/new-apply) you have an intake meeting with one of our coordinators, who goes over possible accommodations with you. There are a lot of possible accommodations that can be provided. Testing accommodations might include extra time, use of a computer or dictation program, or distraction-reduced setting. You might be granted an accommodation for extra time on assignments, a note taker, recording device, electronic textbooks, or exemption from a language class. These all depend on the student, diagnosis, and needs, but they are all extremely common accommodations. In addition to these accommodations, students registered to AccessAbility have fellows, student leaders they can reach out to for support, guidance, and advice. Overall, Mount Holyoke is an incredibly supportive place for students with disabilities, and professors are extremely helpful and accommodating. Let me know if there’s anything else I can help with!
Thanks MoHo2019!
