Basically transfers get whatever’s left after the freshmen have received their financial aid. So: no, financial aid never meets need for transfers except at a rare few schools.
“Many times that 100% claim is really only for incoming freshmen domestic students.” = absolutely true. That’s why CC is not the cheapest way for students with good stats, or why “you can always transfer if you don’t like it” isn’t necessarily true.
UR means: she can take a gap year, not take classes anywhere, go explore he world or work in a supermarket, whatever, and they’ll hold her spot and financial aid for her for a year.
Usually if you refer your enrollment after acceptance…you can NOT matriculate at another college. So…if she defers at Richmond, she would not be able to enroll at Roanoke. Or anywhere else.
Ok, interesting, thanks everyone! Mulling options in case we get bad news from UR FA later in the week. Trying for plan B
You need to have some schools where you can pay all costs with scholarships, federal and state aid (based on your income alone), student loans and work earnings for 4 years.
Need based aid that considers NCP is too unsure. Not every school will award aid based on W2 and 1099s. They are going to want to see tax returns.
Check the conditions of deferment. Usually they will hold your place but aid depends on the FA forms filed the following year, and usually you agree not to attend classes anywhere.
Usually if you defer for a year, you do not go to school that year. Some students work, some travel, but when they start at the school, they start as a freshman. Some might let you transfer courses from a CC or from a travel experience, but not from another school like Roanoke.

deposit of $2500 they will defer her enrollment 1 yr. D

She can’t go elsewhere in the meantime. She can’t go to school, anywhere, for a year.
A slightly different situation, but very telling. An MIT freshman needed to take a one year medical leave due to anxiety and depression. After the first semester at home, his family thought it might be a good idea to have him “test the waters,” and take a CC class and see how his anxiety was. When he returned to MIT he transferred that CC credit to MIT and then was immediately dismissed by MIT. Family shocked, but the “fine print” indicated that during that one year medical leave he wasn’t supposed to take any classes anywhere.
the only time that you can go to another school is usually directed by the school. For example: Cornell & Marist do guaranteed transfers for a select group of students that they do not admit freshman year. The college will advise the student to attend another school freshman year, maintain a certain GPA and they will be guaranteed a transfer to start sophomore year.
Most schools have policies in place that if you defer, you cannot register or take classes at any other college for the time your deferral is in place. You also cannot apply to any other colleges once you are on a deferral.
U of R has a very strict honor code. if she defers for a year and takes any courses at another school following graduation from high school, they will most likely rescind her admission.
You can ask the poster cobrat. He transferred to his LAC and apparently got need based aid when he transferrred. But that was decades ago. Not sure if that is still an option at his school.
Going somewhere with the thought of transferring , if substantial money is needed , is very risky,. Many have been saying that for some time now. I’m surprised you are still considering going down that road. Hopefully, the aid at UR will work out and your daughter will attend and stay put (and forget about W & M for undergrad, if she hasn’t done so already) . Otherwise, College of Charleston instate or another school that will not require the ex husband’s info would probably be your best bet.

Also, UR says for a deposit of $2500 they will defer her enrollment 1 yr. Does that mean she can enroll as a sophomore & secure admission now (not FA though), or must that deferment still be as a freshman? Am I making sense?

@cloudysmom
That means she can take a gap year, then start as a freshman in fall 2018. She can work, travel, anything she wants - with the possible exception of taking college classes. They will hold her spot for a year.
Thanks everyone, too much to respond to but in a nutshell, 1st, I really appreciate all the responses and thoughts, it all helps!
ex H knows he’s out of the will & that is mom is helping us, she tells him a lot, she thinks he’s a big loser and doesn’t hide anything from him.
Thanks about the delay 1 yr, I thought ti might not be allowed that she go to school anywhere else but had to ask.
About tranferring, if she can only afford a less competitive school then will will try to save $ and transfer her to a better quality school. Transferring is becoming much less of an option that previously thought due to freshmen getting the best FA offers for sure. So I am less likely to put her in a MAry Washington or Roanoke. She is a great student and deserves to go to the best school we can REASONABLY afford. After looking at Roanoke I would not want her there for 4 yrs. There is NOTHING to do in Salem, it’s a tiny school, 1700 kids. Her HS is 4000. They have an internship sem in DC which is great but what about the other years? The student panel spoke about doing work at schools and businesses, a lot seemed to want to be teachers but if you want to major in a combination of art history and french studies, there is literally no place for her to do that in Salem. The opportunites at this school pale in comparison to those in larger cities, or at more compeitiive schools.
And about her major, I have quickly said in previous emails that she wants to study Napolean, etc and you guys have said how common it is, etc, well she is really putting together her own major & not as many schools as you might think allow her to do that. Someone also said you can’t go off listed courses, well that is exactly what the schools are telling her to do. She has contacted the history and French depts and the tell her to look at the courses offered, they are all posted and they let her know the degree to which she can build her own major,. NONE of the smaller, less competitive schools have more than a couple of courses.
I have found that some of the less $ schools offer her merit aid but not as much need aid so I wonder if some of it will balance out. Private schools offer her more need (the ones we’ve heard from ) but less merit so it ends up a closer decision that we thought.
I think her back ups as College of Charleston & Roanoke College she should pick C of C, surprisingly. There is sooo much history (meaning places offering internships) she can easily walk to from the school, and unending amount of things to do and historical places to volunteer or just peak her interest in her free time, it would keep her mind engaged unlike Salem, VA. Now for ME, I love being in the mountains and w/ very little people so I would LOVE that school but she is not me, so not trying to bash the area as my fantasy is to retire somewhere like that. If she had to spend 4 yrs at a school she wasn’t thrilled about C of C is academically better and has many more opportunities and interesting classes in what she wants to do than Roanoke.
We know successful graduates of both Mary Washington AND Roanoke.
If College of Charleston is affordable, it’s a terrrific choice!
Of course there are successful graduates at those schools, I never said there were not in fact I was VERY careful to say the opposite, but they are not majoring in what she is, that makes a difference and she is a city girl at heart and really would get depressed in the middle of no where. She loved Richmond and we hope that will be realistic. C of C is afforadable for sure but she wants to go away, it is FULL of girls from her HS and too near to me. If UR doesnt’ work she will have more choices, we hope, come the end of march. UMW is at least closer to DC so who knows.
Oh FYI, Roanoke College just announced while we were there that Amtrak is finishing a leg there this fall so easier to get to DC, RIchmond & airports. The kids there were excited. Still a long trip but way easier than what they had to do previously!
So, @cloudysmom , is UR going to work? If not, College of Charleston sounds like a better option than Roanoke. You did UR ED, so will need to withdraw your apps elsewhere, if the financial aid package at UR is at all acceptable.
@sevmom. Yes, we just paid deposit tonight! Whew! You will all be done listening to me worry, lol! The aid was good but not great, guess my ex messed it up but not as bad as we thought he would. D is very excited & I think the school is better suited to her than W& M, esp as far as aid goes, but that one still stings a bit. She’ll get imnolved w/ being a spider & that will heal it. Now we go back in April, time to start having fun organizing now that we know where she’ll be!
They said nothing about w/d other apps but I assume we have to. Don’t want to though, very curious as to where she got in, lol! Yes, I know, I will! Guess I need to call them all?
Congratulations! So glad to hear UR has worked out!
If you child is accepted ED, she must withdraw her other apps. There is no seeing where she would have gotten into. ED is an honorbound system. Her GC will eventually ask if she is taking the ED offer as D must report to high school that she is attending UR EDIi
@sybbie719 Yes, I know. I said above I was just curious but said I was going to. GC already knows.
@cloudysmom, I’d have her send an email so they have it in writing.
I’m glad things are working out.
@austinmshauri Good idea about the email/in writing thing! And thank you!
