Does anyone know

Does anyone know if there are boarding schools with an Equestrian program that has a very strong academic program as well? Almost as strong as Deerfield or Andover?

taft , i believe .

Girls schools probably have good equestrian programs.

Miss Porters is strong academically and has a very good equestrian program.

Fountain Valley School in Colorado -- I am not a horse person, but I believe they won the national school championships this year (they won something big).

The school is academically strong -- and a place where a good student could really shine.

Thatcher in California is another to look at.

No, not any with extremely strong academic programs.

Foxcroft and Madeira are great "horse" schools though do not have that esteemd an academic program as you want, I'm guessing.

Thanks for all your help. I have been looking at Foxcroft, but my parents don't think they have a strong academic program.

I honestly don't know a lot about horse schools but good luck in your decision.

this might give you some info on schools that are known for horses --

http://www.fvs.edu/podium/default.aspx?t=41715&newsid=392296

it seems that the top schools mentioned in this article are:

Fountain Valley School Equestrian Team
Garrison Forest School Equestrian Team
The Ethel Walker School Equestrian Team
The Andrews School Equestrian Team
Stonegate Farm Equestrian Team
Alpharetta High School Equestrian Team
Patriot Equestrian Team
Grier School Equestrian Team

I think this was English riding -- and I am sure there are other types of competitions. Try looking at high school horse competitions and see what schools do well -- then look at those schools and see what the academics look like.

Did you just want to be able to ride -- or are you looking to compete?

I'm looking to compete competitively. I've ridden for 3 years (maybe longer?) and mostly show in Equitation and Hunters, but have wanted to try eventing.

Foxcroft is veryyyy strong in equestrian
i was gonna apply there so i know all about it
they are very sucessful in there contests etc
butt here academics are not as strong

MPS has a very popular equestrian program....we have this girl who is nationally ranked, and another who is going to the IEA Nationals. The other girls go to quite a lot of competitions...

I went to a TSAO event last fall and a young lady asked about equestrian programs and I remember all the participants waving her off and saying that the representative from Taft would have to address that one because Taft was the only TSAO school that had an equestrian program.

That said, plenty of schools with very strong academic programs have equestrian programs...if you don't make the mistake of limiting your idea of a "very strong academic program" to schools with busloads of cachet.

A Google search for

equestrian "boarding school"

even yielded this list for you to start your search from: http://www.boardingschoolreview.com/equestrian_boarding_schools.php

If you're willing to travel across international borders, may I suggest to you Country Day School in Costa Rica?

http://www.cdsgte.com/

CDS is situated amid perhaps the most wonderful setting on the entire planet -- in a stable (no pun intended) country where voter turnout exceeds 90%. You'll be a few minutes from Playa Tamarindo, arguably the most wonderful coast on the Pacific Ocean. And you'll be a short hop to rain forests and gorgeous mountains. Bonus: English is the primary language at the school. Double Bonus: Tuition is cheap, too!

If you've got Google Earth, fly here: 10°23'39.65"N 85°47'22.54"W

If there was a boarding school for parents, I'd be there.

EDIT: You know what's cool? The school, which is just a couple minutes from the Pacific Ocean, is further east than Indianapolis and is as far from New York City as Phoenix, AZ.

I'm not sure why the Boarding School Review page didn't bring up Culver Academy, but they do have a fine (HUGE) indoor equestrian facility...

http://www.culver.org/students/sports/facilities.asp

And they have any type of riding you would want...

http://www.culver.org/students/special_programs/horsemanship/equestrian.asp

They also have as challenging of an academic catalog as you can find anywhere.

http://www.culver.org/academics/Course%20Offerings%202007-2008.pdf

They do serve a "broader" consituency (test score wise) than the AESDCH world, but for those who want a challenge, they have anything you could want to take. Their graduates go just about anywhere, and they have many very well known and successful alumni.

Kent School in Kent, CT has a longstanding program that dates to the Kent School for Girls, prior to the formal merger with Kent School about 10 years ago. There you go - horsies and academics, in a beautiful setting.

Glad I could help...

culver also has a pilot academy....how cool is that...i saw it on thier dvd...thier campus is as big as st. pauls.

thacher

taft

what about dana hall if u dont mind all girls? they've got a fencing team too and a strong music program. :)
