Does an applicants home state make any difference in the admissions process. I am bringing this up because in many states (CA, New England states, ...), there is a greater number of qualified applicants. I have observed that many Ivy League schools emphasize representing all fifty states. Does this mean that they have to except less qualified applicants from states that have lower expectations for high school students?

NO it just means that a good applicant from a lesser represented state has a better chance for acceptance.

O i see. So its kind of like a minority status thing, or not?

Kind of, but it also goes the other way, yeah if you're from wyoming it helps, but it also helps if you come from some prestigous school in Maryland or California...and not just your state, but your area...being from a rural area of VA will help more than being from Richmond...

home state and High School or Boarding School put one in a different pool of applicants also.

Yeah, I am from a very rural part of North Carolina, and I am pretty sure that I have the highest SAT score ever at my school. The problem is, it doesn't compare to some of the scores I have seen from many kids from CA and the New England states. At first I was fairly satisfied with my scores, but Im just not sure any more.

They are your scores and you can be satisfied. Think of what you had as resource to achieve what you did.........consider that you have done your best. What year are you? Junior? First generation to college?

Geographic diversity can make a difference, by what amount can depend strongly on the school. It won't be a major one by any means, but colleges like it when students can bring something different their campus. So yeah, the same application from Alaska would likely be viewed as stronger than the application from NYC.

And just curious if you don't mind saying, where from NC are you from? Just curious as I'm from Charlotte.

I am a junior and my parents attended a very small college in NC.

says who? I'd say it can make a huge difference for many candidates. Some schools have funding for a particular county in a particular state. How about the very rural areas where there is an amazing kid who has had no access? I say go for it and make the most of these great accomplishements you have.

I am from Avery County( in the mountains).

Crossnore School?

No, I go to Avery County High School, but I live about ten minutes from Crossnore School.

In my humble opinion that helps you quite a lot. What schools are you interested in? Who is helping you? Where do you dream of going to college?
Tell us more............

Well, I have wanted to go to Duke for a long time, but my dream schools are Yale, Princeton, and Dartmouth. I am also interested in Wake Forest. I have never heard of any body from my school that has gone to an Ivy League school, and I only know of one that has gone to Duke. Most people here don't believe they can do it, so they don't try. I just wanted to be the first person to do something different, but I don't know how it is going to work out. Nobody has really helped me with information or anything. I have just researched on my own.

and you are applying when? Next year or you have already applied? I am unclear your grade or year in high school. I am sure that many people on CC will help you...........have you filled out a FAFSA? You will need to do that if you are a senior this year.

If your stats qualify you for those schools, then your location could definitely be a hook (for some schools not others) especially considering no one from your school has ever gone to these sorts of colleges...

Sorry about that. I am a junior this year, so I havent applied or any thing.

OK so you asked about your SAT..........you could if you choose to take the ACT also. Schools use both. ACT is more like an achievement test. Did you take both? Have you considered applying for a summer program this summer? One that would put you on a campus this summer? Has anyone mentioned that to you?

I haven't taken the ACT, and I received a brochure from Duke TIP, but I have to work most of the summer, and my parents can't afford to spend $3000 dollars to send me.
