Does being a Head Girl/prefect mean anything to US colleges?

So right now I'm a senior prefect at my school and will be running for Head Girl next year, but does being Head Girl even matter to US colleges? Or should I focus more of my energy on other ECs...

Every EC can “matter”, depending on how much you do for it. If Head Girl/prefect is a serious time committment and source of responsibility, then yes, it will matter.

It will be even better if you are Head Girl at Hogwarts.

You forgot to add that you founded S.P.E.W., Hermione.

You’ll be fine.
Just go to bed before you get killed. Or worse, expelled.

Are you captain of the Quidditch team? Didn’t you win the Triwizard Tournament, too?

^And people wonder why the rest of the world finds our country ignorant.

I won’t speak for myself because I’m an uncultured orientalist and I couldn’t care less about anything but me. But I’m afraid words like “prefect” and “head boy/girl,” will mean something different to teenagers in the United States than in Great Britain. In the US, it will immediately be associated with Harry Potter—and considering a HP movie came out on Friday, why do you think people would NOT respond like this?

Because we’re supposed to be “smart” and “educated” college-bound students.

Y so srs? 10char

Yes but most of us here are 16 or 17 years old and will find inane things humourous and will not always take things very seriously.

Depends on whether your admissions officer is a fan of HP, tbh

Are you implying we’re not smart and educated? Books and cleverness! There are more important things- friendship and bravery…

Oh my god I miss Harry Potter so much. Anyway, OP, if head girl means like, class president, it won’t be a huge hook or anything but it can’t hurt. If it’d severely detract from your other ECs, I wouldn’t bother wasting all the time and effort on it. However, make sure you’re really doing things that you enjoy, or else nobody benefits.

Yeah you better hope your admissions officer isn’t named Fred or George lol

^ROFL

This was destined to invite HP related comments.

Well at least we know what these things are thanks to HP :). I’m sure it will be helpful in a way similar to being school president or something like that (especially since you said you have to run for it).

It’s actually quite different to a class president, class presidents work for the students, prefects work for the teachers. Prefects are the kids who represent the school at events, help out during literally every school event (backstage, parent teacher conferences, school tours) and are like ‘you can’t eat in the corridors!’. Basically we are the administration’s slaves.

Oh well…

I didn’t mean that being prefect itself was similar to being class president (not that I would know), but it would have a similar effect on your application since you said you had to run for it and you’re representing you’re class (kind of). I don’t know for sure though since I am an American. I know it will definitely look good though :)
