Does being a Native Am Indian help?

Will this help my dd's chances of getting into colleges?
It is official and we have the paperwork to prove her ethnicity.

Just wondering if this helps with entry or scholarships?

Definitely. Native American Indians are URMs. It’s even better if you’re a first-gen college student.

Being a URM can be a boost at some schools.
Does she have tribal enrollment? Many scholarships and tuition programs require that you be officially recognized by a federally recognized tribe.

This is the best nationality to be in terms of college admissions.

Look up the American Indian College Fund, for starters.

It is official and we have the paperwork to prove her ethnicity.

She has her tribe paperwork that proves Blood? If so, that will help her with admissions.

Is she also from a state that sends few students to the schools that interest her?

Don’t know if being AE will help at state schools. Many can’t consider ethnicity.

does her tribe have scholarships? Some do.

What colleges is she considering? If she has the stats for Vandy, then being AE would be a boost for admissions and for scholarship.

However, if she’s low income and applying to full need schools, the need for scholarships is lessened.

*Where are your nursing majors applying to?
My dd likes big cities!!!

She has an unweighted GPA of 3.9 and SAT score 1800 (retaking soon).

Looking at theses colleges:

University of San Francisco
George Washington University
Drexel
Seattle University
Texas Christian U
Gonzaga
University of Portland
Seattle Pacific
Northeastern (won’t get in)
UCLA (won’t get in)
Cal State Chico (we live in CA).

What schools are your rising nursing majors applying to?*

Most/all of those schools do not meet need. Scholarships get applied to “need” first, so do you know how much you’d need to pay? Have you run any NPCs? Do you know how much you can pay each year?

Since UCs and Cal States weight GPA heavily, apply to all that have nursing. However, nursing is impacted in Calif so getting into nursing programs can be a huge challenge.

Among the Ivy league colleges Dartmouth takes a special interest in Native American applicants and students. The college was founded in the 1760s as a school to educate young Indians, but that didn’t last. Within a few years its enrollment consisted almost completely of the children of English settlers. In the 1970s Dartmouth remembered its heritage from the colonial era and established the current Native American program to attract and support Native American students.

Thank you!!! She does have the tribe card that proves her Cherokee heritage…So we will see! Any input like above with Dartmouth is super helpful.

Free tuition at University of Minnesota - Morris (a public LAC) if you qualify for the American Indian Tuition Waiver there. But no nursing (though they have a “pre-nursing” program).

UCs and CSUs don’t consider race or ethnicity in admissions. CSUs except SLO are purely GPA and test score formula based for admissions. UCs and CSUs will likely meet need for CA residents, but run the net price calculators to see.

It helps at Stanford. They will ask you to prove it after you apply with tribal registration etc.

Check out the Cherokee nation website…they have many scholarships that they give out. They are very generous!

University of New Mexico has more than a dozen scholarships for Native Americans, including a number specifically for Native American women.

[General Scholarships :: | The University of New Mexico](http://scholarship.unm.edu/scholarships/general.html)

UNM also offers full tuition scholarships (including remission of all OOS fees) to all National American Indian Scholars

[Undergraduate Scholarships :: | The University of New Mexico](http://scholarship.unm.edu/scholarships/index.html)

UNM has a nursing program, but it’s not a direct admit program. Students must first complete the pre-reqs in College of Arts and Sciences.

[Admission Process :: nursing.unm.edu | The University of New Mexico](http://nursing.unm.edu/prospective-students/undegraduate-program/admission-process.html)

UNM has a significant Native American enrollment (>7%) and many active Native American communities/organizations

A big part is your personal background.

Absolutely.North and South Dakota state supported Universities are very generous with regards to Native Americans.

University of Oklahoma gives scholarships to members of tribes headquartered in OK- Cherokee Nation is one, I’m not sure if United Keetoowah meets the requirement (but I think it should since it is also hqed in Talequah.) At OU you can take classes in Cherokee (the Kituwa dialect.) Yale also has a strong, but small, NDN population. UCLA, UC Berkeley, Evergreen State University, Mills College, Stanford, Haskell Indian Nations University, and any of the tribal colleges are great bets for NDN students. Western Carolina University is very helpful if you are Eastern Band, they offer a minor in Cherokee Studies for UG work and you can take language classes in the Giduwa dialect.

Also to be noted, Cherokee Nation scholarships are VERY competitive and open only to those that live in the Cherokee Nation and counties neighboring Talequah. I’m Cherokee Nation and did not qualify for a scholarship because of this :(

Lots of controversy involving this band of Cherokees. [Home - United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma](http://www.keetoowahcherokee.org/)

Kind of off topic, but coming from the We Wai Kai Nation did not help as their tribal homeland is within Canada. US-based Native American only.

^^In other words, only Americans can be Native Americans. Which makes perfect sense.

I guess the Canadians would be “Native Canadians,” although the Canadians don’t use that term and actually call them “First Nation.”

How do you prove your tribal affiliation?

What if a kid has relatives in the tribe, but not enough blood for federal recognition (no card, etc.) ?
