Does being half american/half south african help me when applying to competitive schools?

yes it does

could you elaborate a bit more?

Are you a white south African? If you are, then i’d say no.
International? I’d say no because international competition is fierce
Have you ever/do you live in South Africa?
You could try to illustrate the diverse perspectives you could bring to a college

If you are south african and you live here, do you celebrate your heritage? Do you strongly identify with being south African?

Well my mom is white and my dad is black.
I currently live in South Africa and have my whole life except for when my parents took a sabbatical leave and we lived in the US.

I consider myself to be South African because I’ve always lived here and gone to school here the only american thing about me is that i have my moms side of the family there (shes american) and I have american citizenship.

are you south african?

No, I’m not South African (the only reason why I asked if you are white south african because I know there a white people who live in South Africa. Since you will be applying as an international (right?). It won’t be as much of a hook to really selective universities (international competition is really fierce)
Oh nvm you have american citizenship.

Yea, it would help . You are part of an underrepresented group

So the “being american but lived abroad my whole life” is an asset?
