Hey all,

I will be interning with Cooper Union this summer in Mechanical Engineering (Cooper Union runs this internship program), I am going to be a senior this fall and thinking about applying to Cooper Union. Will this internship increase my chances of admission?

Thanks!

Hello fellow Asian,
As an upcoming college freshy, I know your pain XD. Although normally internships provide great essay/interview topics, Cooper Union is a different beast altogether. If you’ve seen their admissions rates, getting a 5% chance to a 6% chance doesn’t solve much. Many over qualified people like you will apply, and this is literally a tossup. It’s ok if you don’t tell me, but if you give me some stats (SAT gpa etc) I can give you a thumbs up or down as a former college researcher (aka college stalker).

Don’t forget to relax after college apps…it’s senior year!

I have a 1430 on the SAT math + verbal, and a 800 in math 2 along with a 760 in physics. My GPA is relatively low (3.3) because I struggled a bit freshman yr but I’ve shown an incresing trend in my GPA ever since. On top of that, I am taking classes such as AP computer science, AP physics, AP calc BC which would supposely make me a more competitive candidate. Lastly, 3 years of track team and the president of a big student club at my school. That’s all I can think of for now, thanks again!

So if there are many overqualified people applying (which im not saying there arent), why havent I heard of the school? But thats besodes the point, it seems to me like you have a good chance (not that I would know haha). But the internship at a good school will give you a lot of opportunities at other unis as well!

Thank you Cokelly! Cooper Union is a small school and has about 1000 undergrads in total. But the school itself is prestigious and great for engineering.

Yeah, I wish both of us interns luck;) I was actually an intern at UCSDs neurobiomedical department crowd sourcing the neuronic mapping of the brain. I know, its hard to articulate with proper grammar and I know it will help me with my Uni search. Im actually aiming for UC Berkeley, anyway sorry for the introversion (I tend to be a braggart) bottom line: work experience will increase chances anywhere, not sure about “close to home” factor… I guess it depends on the college. So bottom line, good luck, I hope I didn’t offend you with my ignorance, and keep an open mind you never know what you might get out of it ;)!

it’s definetely going to be a reach.
ur sat score is also quite low. u should consider raising it significantly to even consider being waitlisted or deferred (if you choose to apply early decision) to Cooper Union.
moreover, your extra cirriculars are quite weak. last time i checked, being kicked off of the track team doesn’t allow you to write it down on your application. also, due to your scandalous activities in the UDC, i will be alerting mrs. reidy, who i believe will be remove you from that position.
ericgao, you really have a lot to improve in, and if i were you i would consider applying to a few more “target” schools, like local community colleges, including BMCC and QCC, which both have excellent engineering programs and are quite affordable.

If you can get a letter of recommendation from one of the school’s professors you were working under, that might help… But the fact that your research was done at the same school you’re applying to probably won’t help by itself.

Well, I mean it obviously wont help you enough to garantee admission anywhere. But sorry about ^^, thats why I make SURE no one knows my user name ;).

Thanks again Cokelly & Eli. And Sodagood, as a personal friend of yours, I believe the reasons you made all these false information is because I outskilled you in both basketball and football. But thanks for writing me such a long paragraph, I will definitely place your advices into consider. Yours truly, Ericgao.

ericgao,

to begin, the simple fact that you refer to me as not only a “friend”, but a “personal friend” is extremely disrespectful, rude, and approaching offensive.
moreover, your lack of skill in sports is laughable. my two year old sister can throw a football better than you, especially considering how you cannot spiral the ball. a subway sandwich is longer than the distance you can throw a football. on top of that, your inability to play the game of basketball is a plain disgrace not only to the basketball legends, but also to your own race. what would yao ming and jeremy lin say had they seen you “ball”? they would be as ashamed of that as your parents are at your inability to get an 800 on the math sat section.
my information is from a number of reliable sources, which include wikipedia, which is a reputable source when it comes to college admissions. checking out my footnotes along with my touted resume, would also render me a suitable candidate to post a reply to your thread.

sincerely,

Loving the trash talking, y’all. =P
