Does college start in the spring or fall?

Hey!

Might be a silly question but I always thought college starts in the fall (September) however while browsing through some college websites I saw stuff like this:

"pdf for students applying for the fall semester 2012"
"pdf for student applying for the spring semester 2013"

What does this mean? I'm applying as a freshman. Can I start my first year of college in the spring instead of waiting for September??

Because, you see, I go to high school outside the US and here the school year starts in January and ends in December. Thus I will graduate from high school in December 2012. If I can start college in the spring of 2013 instead of waiting for September, it will save me alot of time.

Can someone please help clear this up? Thanks :)

For you, coming out of high school and into college you apply for the fall semester. The full school year starts in late August and ends around May. That’s a strange school calendar, but in my opinion, I would just wait and go through the system like other students. I’m not even sure if schools let first time freshmen in the spring semester.

“That’s a strange school calendar” lol! yeah, that’s how it is in Australia and some other countries in the southern hemisphere

Thanks for the reply. I guess I’ll wait, maybe get a part time job or something…

If the schools you are applying to offer January or February starts, why not start then? There may not be the huge orientation programs for incoming freshmen, but there will be some sort of introduction program.

Large universities have plenty of people attending each semester or quarter all year, I would bet you will be able to have plenty of opporunities for social integration.

Well it depends on when you get your results for your exams, many won’t allow you to start till you have sent them your certificates so you probably won’t be able to start till the September. Message the uni you want to go and ask them but it’s very unlikely as predicted grades aren’t always correct.

If you are currently a high school senior, you apply for fall term. Many colleges including all of your high ranks, accept freshman admissions only for fall terms. However, some colleges accept new freshman for both fall and spring terms and those who are already out of high school could be applying for spring term 2013 now. Moreover, transfer admissions can usually be for fall or spring term.
