Wikipedia says "Students are also required to pass a swimming test before receiving their diploma." but I haven't found anything about this on Columbia's website. It also says it requires 2 semesters of P.E. - do most colleges require P.E.? I was under the impression that they didn't.

columbia college students not seas are required to pass the swim test…its part of the core and yes columbia students do two semesters of P.E as part of their core. Should be quite fun since you can choose from so many sport (including self-defense for the less athletically minded :))

definitely don’t sweat the gym classes, though my karate class was actually the most challenging of 4 gym classes i took (you can take up to 4 gym’s for credit), and you can take the same gym class multiple times and receive credit for each time you take it (you can actually concentrate in a specific gym class if you take it three times).

and yea, columbia college students are required to pass a swim test before graduation, which, from personal experience, it seems that most of us wait til a week or two before graduation to take (you can retake it as much as you want, all you need to do is swim three laps in the pool). SEAS kids don’t have to take a swim test because it’s assumed they know how to build boats. Barnard students don’t have to pass a swim test because it’s assumed that they can find a SEAS kid to let them on his/her boat ;)
