Does Earlham college encourage every premed student to apply to med school?

I went to Earlham College’s website and saw that their med school acceptance rate is more than 90%. The premed advisers say that they encourage every student apply to med school no matter their GPA and MCAT scores. According to their statistics, the students that apply to medical school are around 8 or 9 in number. Something doesn’t feel quite right and I feel like they artificially inflate their med school acceptance rate. Is there anybody out there that went to Earlham college who knows their system? I want to apply there and I don’t want to be fooled by their statistics. Thanks!

Not only does their info sound insane, it’s just terrible advice.

Are we supposed to really believe that each of their frosh classes only has 8-9 students who think they’re premed.

And are we supposed to believe that all 8-9 students stay on the premed path and apply to med school…and that around 7 or 8 of those 8-9 applicants get into a US MD school?

They’re likely using smoke and mirrors. Maybe some are going to DO schools, maybe some are getting into DO schools. …or Caribb meds.

That said, only completely incompetitant advisors would say that their students should apply no matter what their stats are. That is insane advice.

I found that they say approx. 87% acceptance. I didn’t find a reference saying they encourage every student to apply regardless of stats. Instead I found lots of advice on how to be a competitive applicant, including test preparation. After looking at other college websites, I see no reason to doubt their statistics, while keeping in mind things that may go unsaid.

I couldn’t find the number of med school applicants each year. But I would not assume it is the same as the number of students who start out as pre-med as freshman. I would assume their percentage is based on the number of students who actually complete med school applications.

They do mention reapplying if not accepted the first go-round, so their stats may include both first time and repeat applicants.

Earlham is highly respected in the biological sciences so a high acceptance rate is not out of line. They also mention a med school in Iowa that gives preference to graduates of Earlham over other OOS applicants.

First post here: I graduated from Earlham several years ago. In my time, many more bio and biochem undergrads wanted to pursue the PhD rather than MD. EC has, for many years, ranked in the top 10 in the nation for the percentage of students who go on to earn a PhD in the biological sciences. There were four students in my class who applied to med school and all four were admitted (to MD programs in the United States). Based on what I know of Earlham’s bio program, their numbers seem right to me.
