Does Everyone Have a True Safety?

mine are PennState (Schreyer's Honors College), Fordham, SUNY Buffalo and Stonybrook

my safety schools is UT (I'm Canadian and the admissions officer for my region--I'm currently in China, says my grades + SAT scores are pretty high)...:)

UMD

maybe WUStL

Notre Dame only gives need-based aid, no matter how stellar the student.

Reaches:
Stanford (deferred)
Harvard
Duke
Princeton
Yale
UPenn college (and Huntsman)

Possibles:
Rice
University of Chicago

Likelies:
Pepperdine
University of Miami (FL)

I would consider Pepperdine over every school except Stanford, and I would almost certainly go to Pepperdine over everywhere but Stanford or Harvard if I got significant merit money.

I am ELC, but I didn't apply to any of the guaranteed UCs. 2360 SAT + 4.0 uw GPA + ELC should be a shoo-in at UCSD (my only safety), right? I'd really rather go to Berkeley to major in EECS though...

-shrug-

the thing is that most schools are aware when they see a certain applicant that the applicant WON'T go there if the stats highly exceed what the school is used to. which moves into the "I'm going to reject you because you're too good and even if I accept you, you won't attend" attitude of some colleges.

I had a friends who was rejected to every single college he applied to with a 4.0 GPA and full SAT. He was finally wait list accepted into Yale, but can you imagine those like 2 months between April and June when he realized his 4 years of hard work got him accepted into no college at all?

Anyways, for safeties I would go with in state schools because they tend to be more lax on who they accept.

yea, some folks call that the "Tufts" syndrome, where "over-qualified" students aren't accepted at schools where their stats greatly exceed the bulk of the student body's, particularly if the student doesn't show a great deal of interest in attending such schools. andison had such an experience, took a gap year & reapplied with much more focus & got some great acceptances--some with substantial merit $$$.

CSU LA and LB are my ultra-safeties, got in LA a week after I applied, no response from LB yet. Regular safeties are UC Davis and Irvine.

My dad is a good engineer, have a backup to your backup's backup. That's why he made me apply to CSU LA, haha.

If I'm rejected from the University of Arkansas I'll lose it.

In response to the UC's prestige debate: I don't think most of the people at my school have heard of Berkeley before. I live in central Florida; everyone knows Duke, Harvard, Notre Dame, Yale, and now MIT since I got deferred (meaning rejected) and I'm theoretically smart so it must be good the theory goes (lots of theoy, little learning in this neighborhood, lol). But the UCs, Dartmouth, U of Chicago, or anyplace that has a strong academic reputation but not a big well-known name and/or sports teams--I doubt anyone knows or cares about their reputation here.

Of course, does anyone really care what we think? The only reason we ever make the news is because we can't punch out chads (2000) or we can't pass FCAT (2003) or we didn't prepare for hurricanes (every year).

lol, poor you, steve10c

It's sort of weird to hear of college-bound people who've never even heard of Berkeley. That, to me, is like saying you haven't heard of HYP. D:

In any event, people who consider Cal a safety are either a) really ****ing smart or 2) much too cocky.

Complacency will get one nowhere in life.

This is a wonderful thread; cleary shows maturity among 18 year olds.I hope all of you are successful.

I THOUGHT my only safety was Suffolk University, but some have told me some others on my list r...
LIST:

Williams
Bowdoin
Vassar
Wesleyan
Bard
Brandeis
Skidmore
Wheaton
Hampshire
Suffolk

SAT: M 680, CR 670, W 790
SAT IIs: ML1-670, USH- 720

Rank: 3/136
GPA: 96
All Honors and/or AP's (school only offers 6, I've taken 4)

5 on AP USH test.

GOOD EC's, etc.

is Suffolk my only safety or do I have more? And how about matches?

I'd say Hampshire and Wheaton for sure are safeties, and Skidmore and Bard could fit in that category too. Brandeis is a solid match, the rest seem like match-reaches for you.

i'm having a lot of trouble finding true safeties that i would actually be happy to attend. i'm a CA resident and a transfer student (english major). i applied to uci and ucr as safeties, but i don't actually like either school after visiting them and getting more information. aside from the other UCs i'm also applying to occidental and pitzer, but both are match/reach schools for me. does anyone have any suggestions for not too selective liberal arts colleges and maybe even a CSU? i'm mainly interested in schools on the west coast because i like california, but any ideas would be appreciated.

Safeties
UoP
Cal Poly Slo
UC Irvine
Cal Lutheran (Yay! I already got in with a scholarship)

WANT to go to: UCLA, Barnard, or Claremont McKenna!

I've been accepted to safety (EA) and if all else fails, I wouldn't mind going there...in fact, depending on where else I get in, I might choose the University of San Francisco over all else just because I can really see myself going there and enjoying it. Hopefully, others feel the same way about their safeties.

RWT, I got into USF too with $19,500. I probably will go seeing that my chances at UCB are very slim. I'm happy to know that what I thought was a safety is a safety.

umm Bing and BC are my safeties out of 11 colleges i'm applying

Bates
BC
Bing
Bowdoin
Carleton
Grinnell
Macalester
Oberlin
Reed
Rice
Vassar

Unfortunately i have no reach :(
Although rice is one of my first choices (yes i have more than one first choice) and is most competitive among other colleges i have listed, i regret now that i was too coward to take higher chances. (I do not mean higher changes as applying to better schools) But I'm extremely satisfied with my list and I'll just have to hope for the best!

Good luck everyone-!!!
