Does getting a snail mail or email

that reads :
“If you’re getting this email, it’s because we’d like to invite you to join our mailing list. Why? We know you’re a high-achieving student and we like high-achieving students. And we like to send things to people we like.”
mean anything? I know other colleges play numbers games and MIT does not. Should we be atleast flattered to have gotten this or is this just another marketing mail please? Thanks for any insight !

It means you ended up on our recruiting lists somehow, likely (though not necessarily) by scoring in relatively high ranges on the relevant tests and indicating an area of study that we offer. It doesn’t mean you’re going to get in, it means that just from your test scores and area of study, we’d consider you a plausible applicant to MIT.
