Like if you go to high school in a "smart" country like China and get straight A's or whatever they do there for your junior year, will it look good to colleges? Would you apply as an international student?

No, no boost

It could give you a boost essay-wise. I wrote about my childhood in Malaysia and juxtaposition with American life, and I’m damn sure my essays were most of what got me in (my stats were not stellar).

And you shouldn’t be able to apply as an international student unless you’re not a US citizen (or resident, I forget).

If you are a native English speaker, I doubt you’d be able to get straight A’s (or the equivalent) in the Chinese education system, coming from the American system. For one, you’d have to be completely and utterly fluent in written Chinese (and no, going to Chinese school every Saturday does not make you fluent.) If you were to go to school in China, you’d presumably be going to one of those American schools, where the education you’ll be getting will be in the style of the American system, with lessons taught in English in the traditional American-style curriculum. So this won’t give you any advantage, except for maybe the essay writing advantage Sixela stated above.

With all the time you’ll have to spend in China getting good grades (this is assuming you’re moving into the Chinese system) you’ll lose the opportunity to do any EC’s, which will hurt your college app considerably. Most elite schools now put more an emphasis on EC’s and other subjective areas, rather than raw academic ability (not to say that it’s a considerable de-emphasis on academics, just that colleges would rather have someone with a slightly flawed academic resume w/perfect ec’s over a 4.0/2400 type with no ec’s.)

It really depends
you can write this experience in ur essay
NYU is turning into a “Global Network University”
They love students who are “global” or have “global ideas”

Besides that, the Chinese education system has more difficult curriculums than the American ones
if u could survive the Chinese style,
I’m sure that u could do a great job in college, at least the first year
esp in Math
