Are schools (especially ivies) allowed to share the names and decisions of applicants? If they are allowed, do they? I know I do not want Harvard knowing I applied to Yale and Stanford.

They don’t, but there was a scandal several years back when Princeton admissions officers were using social security numbers to figure out where applicants were also applying, chiefly other Ivies. A number of them got fired.

i always felt awkward telling my interviewers where else i applied, but they always asked

same here tromboneplayer…It always went down like this:
Interviewer-This won’t go in my letter to the admissions office, but just between you and me I am curious about which other schools you applied to.
Me- Well, I did apply to Rutgers, school x, your school, and some safeties like Rider. But, I am really down to your school and school x.

I always feel saying telling an interviewer that their school is your unequivocal first choice sounds ingenuine (even the one time it is actually the truth)

Yeah the interviewers asked and my interviewer was asking me probing questions about where would i go if i didnt go to harvard, “which is a likelihood.” Thanks Mr. Interviewer.

It’s no secret. The Financial Aid office always knows because they receive copies of FAFSA and the Adcoms know because you have to submit your SAT/SATII from college board. It’s uncomfortable, but if they want to know, they can find out. My husband and I were told this from an admissions rep from USC.

I just told my interviewers, “Oh, a couple other schools with strong programs in international relations. You know, it was interesting when I was first researching colleges…”

How to Change the Topic 101, lulz. :p

My interviewer specifically asked “where else did you apply?” right at the beginning of the interview. And so i had to list them out (all 5 of them i think), after which he laughed and said “No safety?” (like laughed audibly). I didn’t want to look like a tool so i had to spill the ea acceptance…

It’s okay though. He’s very nice. In our email exchanges after that he always concluded by saying tt i don’t have to worry because i have a pretty nice “backup plan” to fall back on :)

No, I’m sure they wouldn’t know. But my interviewer asked me the same question, where else I applied to. He seemed really interested in the other schools, but was rooting for me to get into Harvard most of all =)
