Does it matter if a research paper I co-author has my parent's name on it?

Hi,
I’m a student interested in Economics and Finance and I was planning to do some research with my mother on Corporate Governance over the summer. I’m self-studying college-level Intermediate Economic Theory to prepare for it. I wanted to know if publishing a paper with my parent’s name on it means anything to colleges.

I’d assume it means something–having a paper peer reviewed and published is an impressive feat. I do, however, think that if colleges look closely at the authors, they might perceive the paper as less impactful/impressive as others who went out on their own. I’m in no way trying to diminish your work–you’re taking initiative for something you seem to enjoy. But the fact is when colleges see that a parent helped a kid start a club or helped them get an impressive job or helped them with an academic paper, it’s gonna be scrutinized a lot more. The question will arise as to whether you actually contributed to the paper, or if your mom pulled some strings to get your name in it. I say you should 100% include it, but see if you can find a way to prove you actually wrote the paper–maybe a section at the end where all authors make a statement. Best of luck!
