Does knowing 5 languages make me different?

Hello, I was wondering if knowing five languages (English, Spanish, French, Arabic, and a bit of Urdu/ Hindi since I'm still learning it) would make me stand out in my application.

Thank you guys in advance :)

Is learning languages your passion? What does it mean to you? How has it shaped you as an individual?

If you can answer these questions positively, then it does make you different. But most colleges won’t care if you’re trying to look different just for the sake of looking different.

It does, but how do you proof it? Perhaps by SAT subject or AP tests.

Your knowledge must be certified: sat subject, AP test, Cultural Center certificate, etc. In addition, it helps in distinguishing you, but to help you ‘get in’, it’d have to be part of your essay in a meaningful way, and preferably if you intend to do something with it (ie., you intend to study Maghrebi French students in the town the colleges you’re applying to have programs with… or hoping to explore archives for info re: Arab-Spanish warriors who settled in France around the 8th century through the XYZ program offered by the college…; it’d be MOST important if you intended on attending a school such as Middlebury with a double or triple language (you can study a language in depth, or two to advanced level, AND have another major such as Political Science or Economics…), or (in particular) a Language Flagship in Arabic (Maryland CP, U Michigan, UT Austin, U Oklahoma, Michigan State) or Urdu/Hindi (UT Austin). The language flagships are heavily recruited, too.

Yep, it does. (Speaks Bengali, Japanese, English at home, learning French and Arabic)
Even if you aren’t leaning in the languae department, being multicultural is going to be useful in the next few years, and schools also recognize this.

So what to do with this? SAT or AP tests are a good way of proof. If not, a rec letter from a club or place you speak said foreign languages at might be of help.

Finally, your essay is a good place to talk about your languages, and how they’ve helped/shaped your understanding of the world around you.

Hope this is of some help to you. Good luck!

I think I’d go somewhat with " preferably if you intend to do something with it" - except make it: IF you are doing something with it, something with some impact beyond meeting your own interests. Or the luck of being in the right place to learn them. Or having the parental encouragement. So, what have you done with this?

5 ! that’s amazing,
but yes, i think the worth depends on where you’re applying
