Does Medical School Consider Undergrad Major and GPA Situation

Curious as to what everyone thinks about med schools considering undergraduate major(s). I am an astrophysics major with a math minor. Currently my GPA is in the range 3.57-3.65 with all upper level undergrad physics and math courses. I entered college with 50 credits from AP scores in high school so I didn't have any gen eds to fulfill so i didn't have any classes to give my GPA a little boost. I have decided I like physics and math too much to change my major just to have a better GPA (I will also be applying to graduate schools for theoretical physics Ph.D in case med school doesnt work out but I'd rather go to med school). Does the level of difficulty of my major help at all or no? No offense to any other majors but I took a couple psychology/biology courses and received 4.0's and imagine I could have an overall better GPA in a major of that sorts. Any advice is appreciated, thanks

Any hard science major is seen favorably by med schools. School prestige is also considered to some extent, aside from the all-important GPA.

That said, a 3.65 at a fairly highly ranked institution along with a high MCAT score and good prof recs should get you into most mid-tier med schools. Acceptance to the best med schools will be tough given your lower than average GPA.

Yeah I agree with about the top tier schools would be stretch and rightfully so. Is there a way to figure how the university i go to is ranked? Long story short I applied to HYPS and other elite schools for undergrad but got denied by all so I ended up at large public university (Big 10). And when you say mid-tier med schools can you give some examples? I’m interested into what schools you think i’d be competitive for based on GPA alone

By GPA alone, you are a little lower than average at even mid-level schools. But your major and attendance at a more highly ranked school should make up for it as long as you are going to one of the top five publics (Cal, LA, U of M, UVa, UNCCH).

Some possibilities
Ohio
Indiana
UF
Miami
Stony Brook
Illinois

among many others at this tier level

If all else fails, you can always go to Ross University.

In a word, no. The med school process is very much numbers driven. The boards here will give you the process used, but basically, your gpa in the premed type courses is computed, along with your full gpa. That and your MCATs pretty much determine an in or out. Those with difficult majors like engiineering and such are usually out of luck if their grades are not up there. The same for those who got to schools with steep grading curves.

damn haha that’s not reassuring. Ok because i came in to undergad with so many credits I can graduate early… would either of you recommend maybe taking another semester worth of class (In sciences/pre med type classes) to boost my GPA? and whats an above average GPA for med schools 3.85?
