I am an international student applying to a university in New York State. I mentioned in my essay that I drank a glass of wine at home under the permission of my parents when I was under 18. The country I live in does not prohibit alcohol consumption of teenagers/minors. I wonder if that will have a negative effect on my application. I'd be grateful if anyone could answer my question. Thanks!

Doubtful, but with a limited word count on the essay, I personally would have deemed this information to be superfluous and eliminated it.

True!!! I mean what you just said sounds great.

If its absolutely essential to your essay, I think you’ll be fine with this info. because it will only emphasize how different and international you are…

But if its just an extra detail…

I agree with @skieurope. It’s not illegal, so it can’t be said to harm you; but, what is it relevant to?

What I’m getting at is, if you’re writing an essay that necessitates talking about underage drinking, are you sure that you’re writing the essay that you want to hand in to an admissions officer? It seems like a meaningless detail, and the wrong direction for an essay, to me.
