I’m in my second semester of community college and I qualify for enough aid to get a check refund by the end of the semester.
Last semester I spent most of the refund on classes for this semester, however, last second I got a 75% refund for my classes (as I was expecting to transfer but decided not too) and enrolled in classes that started a littlie later in the year.
Their are now two numbers on my account summary that read “refund” and “amount currently due”.
The refund reads $1,191.00
but the total amount due is negative $2,121.15
So when my school sends out refunds am I going to get a $1,191 check, or a $2,121 check?
There is no way for us to answer that question. If you started school but then dropped classes, it is possible that a return of Title IV funds must be done. Whether or not it must be depends on when in the financial aid timeline you dropped classes. If it does have to be done, your financial aid amount might be adjusted. For this reason, I encourage you to contact your school’s financial aid office to find out if your aid is final - be sure to mention that you dropped classes. If it’s finalized, talk to your Bursar’s office to discuss the possible refund.
Also, if any of your refund is from a loan, and if you don’t need that money to survive right now, I suggest returning the refund to the financial aid office & telling them to return the loan to Direct Loans (or you could send it directly to your servicer yourself). This will save you lots of money in interest over time.
I don’t think that’s necessary. All my financial aid was grants so the money is entitled to me no matter what. All I’m wondering is if the 930$ gap between my refund amount currently due will be paid out to me as part of my financial aid refund.
Refunds are sent out routinely on a certain date so I’m sure I will get a check in February, the question is if these checks are solely financial aid refunds or if these entail all money currently due to students. I’m sure this is common knowledge for anybody who’s ever paid for classes they later changed and had left over money.
Mostly writing this for more information for people scrolling since it sounds like you just don’t know.
You asked a question. You thanked readers in advance for their help. kelsmom gave you the best answer that anyone here possibly can, which is to ask the appropriate person at your school. The attitude that you came back with is not helpful to you, or anyone else on CC. Talk to someone at your school. I suggest that you be nice; that will get you better results than copping an attitude.
