Alright I do not come from a wealthy family at all, I only have my mothers income but a family member agreed to pay for my last 2 years of university. I am also taking out some loans so i will not be applying for any financial aid and I am just wondering if not applying for any financial aid or scholarships will give me an advantage in the admissions process. I am planning on applying as a transfer student to NYU, Boston University, and the University of Michigan for Winter term. I have around a 3.6gpa with 50 credits. Any thoughts on this issue.

you should find out what “paying for 2 yrs” means. For the 3 schools you’ve listed, you can assume +$50K each year. That means your relative needs to give you $100K.

But if your family income would make you eligible for some FinAid, I would take it. I wouldn’t worry about not being accepted, to be frank.

* I am also taking out some loans so i will not be applying for any financial aid *

??? This sounds nutty. Who is going to be your qualified co-signer???

You only have your mother’s income. Is that low, med, or high?

Why do you have some odd fear about applying for need-based aid or merit scholarships???

Nearly all schools are “need blind” so what are you afraid of?

Taking out loans instead of applying for aid is just so short-sighted and gives you no advantage at all…instead it could ruin your life.

*Hey yall, i will also be applying as a transfer for winter 2014, i had a 3.9 gpa with 30 credits my first year, had to take a smester off, and i transferred to a top 50 school and got a 2.75 gpa with 13 credits at that school so my overall gpa is 3.77 wit 43 credits. i am taking 15 credits online this fall and i have a ton of ec’s community service. my gpa was bad last semester because my uncle, dad, and grand father all died during that semester and i had to come home a lot which was a 7 hour plane ride away. i am from canada and i am not asking for financial aid or scholarships. What are my chances?

I am so sorry to hear about the loss of your father and other family members all in the same month.

Ok…you’re an international and you’d be a transfer student. That really lowers your chances for aid anyway…and certainly probably means no aid from the schools on your list.

Frankly, I think your idea of borrowing money is not good.

Why not get the needed credits for your first two years in Canada for a low price???

How much will that relative pay each year for your last two years? Does that person realize how expensive schools are here? The amount could $120k. Would they pay that much???
