Does Penn like debaters?

I know a lot of debaters have been accepted or go to Penn, so I have to ask the question: is this a hook Penn likes to see (specifically Lincoln Douglas)?

I'm not sure whether there's an actual hook or not, but I was accepted ED to UPenn (M&T Program) and I had debate (yes, Lincoln-Douglas) on my resume...specifically I was one of New Jersey's representatives to the 2004 National Debate Tournament. I know UPenn has a debate society, so maybe...

bump bump bump bump anyone have info

I doubt it has anything to do with Penn, but moreso with the preferences of those who debate. I find it hard to believe that Penn would view debate as any different from Math league or something like that. Just as I doubt MIT prefers either; at the end of the day, it's the type of student that chooses the school that causes the numbers to appear inflated.

Sorry if the post is incoherent... I'm writing a paper and I'm not really focused.

I do debate and was accepted to Penn. My friend does debate and was accepted, and likewise with my third friend. We three were the only Penn acceptances at our school, so... who knows.

it's probably just a coincidence, i do debate as well, though not too much ld. i'm glad to know penn will have a lot of people who share a common interest.

i did debate throughout high school and was accepted... just additional data for ya.

This is my first post on these forums, but when my friend Legend mentioned me, I figured I wanted to chime in.

As Legend said, all three Penn acceptees from my school have speech experience. One of the three qualed for Nationals last year, and would have if he actually went to Nat Quals this year. He's going to Yale though, so only my school is only sending two Quakers. I myself have done LDV, but only at two tournaments, each of which were after I applied. Still, I got into Wharton, so things seem to have worked out. The way I see debate, is that it is a good EC and will only help, but simply doing LD is probably not enough of a hook to get in.

it probably helps more than some other ec's tho, it would probably put u over the edge certainly if you were borderline

Penn, like an other ivy or top school, likes passionate people. If you're passionate about debating, that's definitely a plus - perhaps good debates are inherently passionate. However, debate in and of itself is no better or worse than other extracurriculars like community service or science research or whatnot

Quick Question, for those of you who qualed or had friends who qualed for nats and got accepted, was this during junior year (before acceptance into UPenn) or senior year (after acceptance into UPenn)?

(Just a question to clarify causation or correlation)

Who's qual'ed and going to visit UPenn while in Philly? I will be.

My friend qualed after Junior year; he went to Nats in Salt Lake. Have fun with your causation and correlation analysis!

I myself will try to qual in Congress this weekend, but its not like Nats will be my only opportunity to visit Philly (again). :)
