Does Studying Abraod Help to Get In?

I am actually a junior in high school studying abroad right now. My mom is wants me to look into college on the internet-- and I found this site. I've heard some schools like kids who study abroad, is this true? If so, which schools do you think?

I don't know about that question specifically, but Tufts University is really into having their students study abroad and diversity and such, so I bet that would help you in their admissions.

I studied abroad in Japan. It was only for the summer though. I am really interested in East Asian Studies/Japanese and I tried to show that in my application: ECs (including the study study abroad), intended major, common app short answer, highest grades in japanese class, recs both relating to japanese/east asian studies, and other stuff. Hopefully, it's my "hook" or whatever but...I don't know.

I'll tell you how it goes when I get my decisions in April. By the way, studying abroad certainly can't hurt you because it's such a great experience. It's just how you articulate it in your app I suppose...

Most schools see it as a benefit if you have studied abroad and it always look good on your apps. As for schools that look at it most favorably, it is probably those that care about things like international relations (like Georgetown SFS) and liberal arts schools.

i studied abroad also in South America, for about 10 weeks, but i would say that it wouldn't hurt as long as u were actually there experiencing the culture and living with a family rather than just taking a tour for a few weeks.

yeah its good. i wish i could go. still, im a vegetarian and the country i would go to-argentina-is a bit heavy in the meat catagory. still, i want to study in spain or something sometime, it would be great to really solidify spanish in my mind (ya know, beyond just worksheets and tests into actually thinking in spanish) i want to go to a college with a great study abroad program.

I've done two three week study abroad programs the past two summers to Spain and Costa Rica. They were amazing and vastly different experiences. I took classes, lived with host families, and toured the country through the school. Hopefully my great experience will help will college admissions (it helped my spanish and outlook on life).

This is my solution to high price study abroad & volunteer programs!

Oh and add to what I said above that you need to make sure you spell "abroad" right on your apps ;)

Good luck!

for colleges with good study abroads, I think georgetown has a good program, as well as NYU
