Does suspensions ruin chances?

I have a 3.7 GPA unweighted rising, 4.1 weighted and rising, a 27 on my ACT, haven’t gotten my SAT scores back. Helped create a club and am in 3 others (one is Beta Club), in which we compete in competitive events. I plan on taking 6 AP classes by the time I graduate and take all honors. I volunteer outside of school at a local retirement.
Problem is I’ve been suspended out-of-school twice; once for pushing a kid and once for talking back to a teacher (she said she felt threatening, I’m a good 2 feet taller than her when I stand).
My school is very strict but I know I made a mistake. The mistakes, however, were two years ago and I haven’t been a problem since. They were both in the same year and that was a bad year for me personally and emotionally.
Every time I try and go for something in school I get stopped by to. I had my invitation to NHS rescinded although I meet all other qualifications, and I was wondering if having this will ruin my chances of getting into a good college. My aims are colleges like GW and UNC. Any thoughts?

Ouch! It might hurt you, yes. All you can do now is work with what you have.

Are you diagnosed with anything? Did you do anything after to help avoid the behaviors again? That’s what the school will want to know. Anger mgmt? Join the Bully-free alliance? Start a bully free zone at school? That kind of thing. Show you that not only have you not done it again, but that you learned from it…and grew.

Good luck!

I don’t have behavioral issues, but my grandfather (who I’m incredibly close to) was brushing with death most of that year. If it is any consolation the same thing happened this year and I came to school the next day after saying bye to him (for what I thought was the last time) with no issues and didn’t have any problems. The school never gave me a chance to explain my side or talk about what was going on, they just talked to the kid and the teacher it happened to and made there decision.

I was suspended for 4 days senior year but managed to get into very selective schools. Make sure you spend a lot of time talking things over with your guidance counselors and teachers to get excellent recommendations.

I was suspended for bullying and got into an Ivy league institution. With holistic admissions, they’ll look at it within the context of your application. Just keep doing what you’re doing.
