Does taking out private loans without a co-signer affect your credit score?

Sounds like your parents need to correct the tax form…and you need to get this all reconciled with your financial aid department.

Are you saying the college is covering ALL your other costs beside your $6000 inability to get loan?

@MYOS1634 i spoke to FA and they couldnt help me out. I am still desperately seeking a loan without a cosigner.
@thumper1 yes all my other costs are covered by institutional aid or I am able to pay it besides the $6000. i dont know what to do!

Have you spoken with your parents?
Why can’t they correct the FAFSA ? If they don’t have counter access right now could they go somewhere with internet access and sign a document you filled out so they don’t have much to do?

They are unwilling to amend their tax returns because doing so would cost them a lot of money in losing some tax deductions.
I am thinking I should pay with a credit card and make minimum monthly payments with my part time job. Until I qualify for a private loan and use that to pay off the credit card. What do you think of that, or do i have any other options??

What year in college are you? If you are NOT a college senior…your plan is flawed.

ETA…you are a freshman.

2019 is a full year away from NOW.

What will you do in subsequent years to pay for college??

Do you have $6000 credit line on your credit card? At what interest rate?

I won’t even comment on your parent unwillingness to correct a flawed tax return. I guess they don’t understand that the IRS could catch up,with them at any point…and they would be subject to payment, interest, and penalties. BUT that’s a whole other thread.

i cant control my parents unfortunately.

I know it is flawed, and in subsequent years I will make sure they file the taxes correctly. I was hit with the 6000 dollar cost now because they stripped away the federal aid i had originally gotten because i had not submitted amended tax returns. In subsequent years this will be more spread out and payable throughout the year.

I have a less than 6000 credit I just checked which leaves me short… what can i do then??

also I have just gotten a part time job that pays me 9 dollars at 25 hours a week

The 2018-2019 FAFSA will use the 2016 tax return. Was that filed correctly?

Do you have anyone who might loan you this money…grandparents? An aunt and uncle? Your parents?

Or might they co-sign a loan with you?

Do you have ANY savings you can use? A car you can sell?

Do you qualify for a credit card and would you be able to have such a limit? I though the limit for students was $1,000.

@thumper1 unfortunately the answer to all those questions is no. there must be something i can do.

@MYOS1634 i cant pay all of it with my credit card.
@suzy100 they have very bad credit.

Have you asked your parents to cosign for the loan?

Unfortunately your parents can’t apply for a Parent Plus Loan because of the fafsa issue.

If they applied and were denied, you could get $4000 additional Direct Loan money…but then…if th FAFSA was OK…you would get the regular federally funded aid…and wouldn’t need that.

Maybe you need to request a leave of absence for this semester…but first find out…will you have to pay the full cost to attend anyway…because it’s too late to withdraw and get a refund?

Honestly…this should, have been resolved BEFORE this semester even started.

Does your college have an ombudsman? If they do…see them…ASAP!

yeah if i qualified for federal loans i would qualify for the federal aid and not be in this situation.if only.
i honestly cannot see myself taking a leave of absence and the thought of that is terrifying.
i thought it was resolved but i didnt know they would pull the federal aid from me so suddenly.

what should i tell the ombudsman? any other options to receive the funds I need??

Ombudsmen are folks who try to resolve problems. You just need to state your case to this person. They might not be able to help you…but then again…they might be able to. Sometimes they think out of the box.

Do you have a job…now? What will you be doing THIS summer…2018?

yes i have a part time minimum wage job that i just got and i have applied for an internship this summer. however, i am on a quarter system, and so if i do not pay the winter quarter balance of about 6000 soon, i will not be able to register for spring quarter classes.

Take a leave of absence for the Spring quarter. Get a full time job. Pay off the debt.

And while you are at it…make sure that this school is actually affordable.

If you’re certain you’ll be able to pay that credit card within six months, do that. If there’s any doubt… Don’t. The rates are outrageous and would prevent you from returning to college. Do see the ombudsman. Then, don’t enroll for spring quarter. Take a leave of absence. (Do NOT withdraw). Start working full time and doing whatever the ombudsman could agree on.

Do you have any skills where you could work a weekend event and earn a lot of money? My nephew is a referee and can earn a lot by working a weekend tournament. Sometimes there are house/pet sitting gigs that pay quite a bit for a weekend or week and you can continue to go to school and work your other job. Some conventions need workers for weekend shows.

Babysitting pays very well where I live. It’s a great gig for you because you can study after the kids go to sleep. Sometimes professors hire students to babysit their kids.
