Does taking the CLEP affect graduate admissions?

I’m taking a clep exam (college algebra) in a few weeks and I was wondering does getting credit for the clep exam affect my chances of grad school?

If your college awards you credit for the CLEP score, it will appear on your transcript as X credits by exam. There isn’t a grade, so it won’t affect your GPA. Whether it is recorded as College Algebra or as generic Math credits will affect what the next math class you can take is.

It will not be a problem for grad school applications. It might even be. Good thing if that grad school requires College Algebra, and your college has recorded it that way.

Two of my children took CLEP tests for college credit and both went to grad school so it did not get in the way of their further studies. And it shortened their time in their undergraduate studies.

If you are taking a CLEP in college algebra, that tells me you aren’t in a STEM program so your math would not be as important.

I plan on getting my degree in CompSci

Are you currently enrolled in high school and CLEPing? If that’s the case, then I wouldn’t think there is a problem. It really depends what your underspgrad looks like overall and where you are applying.

It won’t affect your graduate admission as long as you take a high level math class during your high school or undergraduate years.

But if that’s your terminal math course, a graduate school might question your basic math ability.

I’m currently in community college at the moment. My plan was to just take the algebra clep so I can move up to higher level subjects such as trig and calc

CLEP for lower or remedial level math wouldn’t matter if you major in CS, which typically requires calculus, linear algebra, and discrete math at the minimum.

Admission to CS PhD programs will probably focus more on your upper level CS course work, undergraduate research, and recommendations from these.

Your plan makes good sense. But run it by the Math department at your CC. Find out if there is anything else you will need to review to be ready for trig. It is possible that the review you are doing for the CLEP won’t cover everything you need to know.
