Does the School of Engineering Care About EC's?

I know Tech and most state schools don’t put an enphasis on extracurriculars, but now I wonder considering how competitive the engineering school is becoming. I find it difficult to maintain my grades and ECs. I’ve only held one officer position, stayed in three clubs for 3 years, and did an art internship over the summer. I’m planning to get a job this summer too, but I’m still worried.

Reality is that courses taken, grades received and standardized test are the most important according to VTs website. Then the next level is the ECs. I think those and essays are what may swing the reviewer once they have a reviewed the “stats”. They always indicated that it is better to have 1 key EC that you are committed to and heavily involved with vs many as a participant. Quality over Quantity if that helps. Best of luck.

agreed, good luck to you. Make sure youre passionate about something. nobody wants to watch someone half ass anything.

Good grades + Good personality = Good application

EC’s are relatively low weight for VT admissions. You’d still need good grades and SAT scores to probably get to the point where they would review your EC’s and essays if you were borderline.

It depends on what major you are applying for. When dd applied and got accepted into engineering one of her ec’s was doing research that got published. Admissions told us on the phone that was a plus point on her application.
VT has so many clubs. I still think they want students that are going to be engaged and involved in school activities and spirit.

There is mention of leadership and service.
There are almost 1000 organizations to participate in on campus so I don’t think they want students that are only studying but that are involved.
