Does this count as an award?

Preamble's thread reminded me to ask this...last year I participated in a contest for the Foreign Language Association of GA (Chinese) and won a superior ribbon (highest category). My teacher said I can put it on my college application, but is it really worth that much?

What grade were you in? I think colleges would look down on it, so why not?

Probably not, but there’s no real reason not to mention it.

That’s the problem; I got this award in 8th grade. Even if I didn’t say when I received the award, would colleges still frown upon it?

Oh, okay…you generally shouldn’t list middle-school stuff unless it’s really important or affected/carried over to your high school stuff.

I’d say hold off on it. You still have lots of time to win other awards/recognition, and an award from before hs probably won’t enhance your application.

You have to say when you won the award and you still have plenty of time to win more things, so I wouldn’t…
