Does UC use ACT writing score?

If you look at the freshman profiles for all of the UC schools, they list the SAT writing score, but not the ACT writing score. Instead, they list the ACT ELA score, which is a mix of the writing score and the English section. Does the UC just use this ELA score instead of the writing score for people that submit the ACT? @Gumbymom

You must take the ACT with writing for the score to count.

I understand that, but I was wondering if the UC uses the ELA score alone or the writing score. The writing score is worked into the ELA score.

For Both the SAT essay and the ACT writing are considered in the admission process for the UC’s, but they will put more emphasis on your personal insight essays more than the SAT/ACT essays. I would not be surprised that the essay/writing requirement may disappear within the next few years.

My belief is that since the essays on both these exams cannot be coached, they like to see how well applicants are able to articulate their thoughts on the fly. (Again this is my take on why the essays are considered).
