Our AP classes all have required finals, often more difficult than the AP test (less curving). In some classes the finals are just before or after the AP testing window. The AP score (if taken) has no effect on grades.
Our schools end ~June 10. So, classes have several weeks after AP tests for other stuff. AP Physics builds self-chosen things; son build a rail gun. AP Calc BC covers additional topics required in California for Calc 2 credit. APUSH did a unit on conspiracy theories (how they evolve and how to detect them).
Not required to take AP exams at our HS. We pay per AP test taken, just paid that bill this week for 4. No weighting at our HS so no boost other than perceived rigor on transcript I guess. Students take a final in the class, AP test has no bearing on final taken and grade.
I require my kids to take the AP exams for APs they sign up for. Just part of the class in my opinion, but that is just me.
No, and his school never emphasized and has now eliminated the AP curriculum in favor of its stronger regular program which all colleges are familiar with. Any student applying to colleges where AP credit could be useful is welcome to sit for any AP exam though.
The cost of the exam is a burden - $282 for 3 required exams. Her AP courses may have helped her admittance to her first choice school, but she will not be able to make use of them towards college credit, as far as she’s been able to tell. We did ask the school for assistance with the fee or the approval to miss the test, and the school was able to assist with a small scholarship that made the testing affordable. Each school is different, but for those families struggling with the cost, it may be worth it to ask for assistance. @LoveTheBard Our public school requires the student to sign an agreement that they will take the test when the student registers for the AP class.
