Does your school have any dumb prerequisites needed in order to join certain classes?

For my school, in order to be eligible to take an AP class, you have to make straight As in the corresponding Honors class. (Ex. In order to take AP Bio, you would have had to make straight As in Honors Bio I, etc.. Sorry, I don't think I made much sense up there.) However, for AP History classes, you have to have straight As from both an Honors English and an Honors Social Studies class from the previous year.

Also, you can't take Calculus until senior year. A lot of people at my school take Pre-cal during their freshman / sophomore year and are eligible to take Calculus during their sophomore / junior year, but they're forced to take AP Statistics or some other math course to pass the time.

My school also has a dumb rule that requires you to take a certain math class in order to take a certain science class. For instance, if you want to take Chemistry I, you would have to be in Algebra II or a higher math class. In order to take Physics I, you would have to be in Pre-cal or a higher math.

My school doesn’t have anything like that. Placement is entirely up to the student and teacher, and the guidance counselors simply execute.

There is a dumb requirement for graduation though. One year of “vocational education.” I.e. Floral Design, Woodshop, Autoshop, Ceramics, or ROP. It sucks for the really academically motivated kids who want to take all academic classes through high school.

I’m getting this waived, though, because I’m graduating a year early and couldn’t fit it into my schedule.

If you want to take Economics (“advanced” economics, not AP - we don’t have AP), which is required, you must have taken US History, and the pre-requisite for that is World History. Basically, only seniors can take Econ, even though it’s not even an AP course.

Also, almost all AP classes have a Pre-AP class that is practically mandatory - that is, counselors will do everything they can to prevent you from taking the AP class. As a result, nobody is allowed to take AP courses in freshman or sophmore year.

My school used to do that in some way. You needed Algebra 1 to take Biology, Geometry to take Chemistry, Precalculus or Algebra 2 and Advanced Functions and Modeling to take Physics. It was a really dumb rule and was taken away after enrollment in Physics dropped from 27 to 12 in one year.

Yes our school does. I’m still trying to find a way around it…

Wow I feel lucky that I go to my school now. Haha.

My school has some math prereqs for science class. It actually makes sense, since you need to know some algebra for chem, and some calculus for physics.

Freshmens/Sophs have only 1 AP and they’re the same source (AP WH)

Juniors/Seniors only restricted to 3 APs a year. Plus, we need to finish Bio/Chemistry to take AP Bio. AP WH for AP US history.

Our schedules for High School is basically set the day we step into high school…

To take AP Physics, you had to have either taken Chem Honors or AP Chem, which I find bizarre.
There’s also this odd rule that you aren’t allowed to take AP Econ or AP Government before senior year and you can’t take them both in the same year. So, basically, if you want to take AP for both you’re going to have to selfstudy.

Ok my school is insane with prerequistes look:
math:
in order to take honors advanced geometry, trig, precalc you need an A+ in the regular preceding course (for ex: you would need an A+ in adv geometry, in order to go to honors adv trig) so I was never able to take honors adv math
Ap stat - need a B in current math class, easy prereq, (must complete trig) (i took this)
AP comp sci - need a B in current math class, easy prereq, (must complete geometry) ( i took this)
AP calc ab - need at least A in adv precalc or at least a C+ in honors adv precalc, hard prereq (i am taking this now)
AP calc bc - need at least B+ in honors adv precalc, adv precalc people can’t take this course
Science -
honors bio, honors chem, honors physics - (get A in preceding reg course, or B+ in preceding honors course) (i never took honors bio, but i took honors chem and i am taking honors physics now)
AP Bio - (must complete bio and chem) need A in reg bio and chem, or B in honors bio and chem
AP Chem- (must complete honors bio, trig, and honors chem) - need A or B+ in honors bio and chem
AP physics C - (must complete bio, chem, physics, and precalc) - need an A or B+ in those courses (preferably honors)
S.S
AP World - need at least A in global 1
AP US - need at least A in global 2 or C+ in ap world
AP Euro - need at least A in reg us or C+ in AP us
English
AP english lit and comp - show passion for english and get at least a B+
AP english lang and comp - show passion for english and get at least a B+ or C+ in ap english lit and comp
Language
spanish/french/italian 4 acc - get B or higher in s/f/i acc 3
s/f/i 5 acc - get C+ or higher in s/f/i acc 4
s/f/i AP - get B+ or higher in s/f/i acc 5

In order to take AP bio, physics, OR chem, you have to take honors chem, physics, and bio before you can take the AP version.

The humanities classes are easier to get into.

Sent from my iPhone using CC

Well in order to take an AP class at my school–or even honors for that matter–my school uses our scores: plan, explore, ect. Sometimes they give an exeption if you get straight A’s. However, in order for me to take AP Computer Science, I am required to take an Information Technology class. I don’t mind the course, but it’s regular… Lol.

We have math requisites for our science classes too. VERY annoying.

You need to be in Precalculus BC Honors to get into AP Chem and AP Physics B. So basically you can’t get into those unless you took Geometry Honors as a freshman and stayed in honors classes.

Freshmen have no APs. Sophomores have APUSH or AP Spanish Lit if they are fluent. If you’re not fluent, you’re placed in Spanish 1.
Juniors are required to take AP English Lang.

And wow, it seems easy for you guys to get into AP Comp Sci.
For us we need to complete AP Calc BC. And you can only get into that if you take Precalculus BC Honors.

Only thing you need to do here is get approval from the teacher.

I go to a Catholic school, so I am required to take 4 credits (Averaging at least 1 class every semester) of religion in order to graduate. Ew.

Also:

You can’t take advanced gym without plain-old gym.

You must either test out of or take keyboarding in order to take a business/computer class.

You must take at least one art/band class.

You must be taking geometry concurrently in order to take chemistry. You must be taking trigonometry concurrently to take physics.

You can TA for a grade.

You can take a study hall on a “pass/fail” basis. (I have no idea how this works. Lol)

My school has prerequisites but they are not strict about it at all. The problem is that we can’t drop an AP class once we sign up for it, which is kinda dump.

Public school with a ton of AP’s

AP Biology- Biology I and Chemistry I
AP Chemistry- Chemistry I
AP Macroeconomics- Civics or AP US Government
AP US History- Civics or AP US Government
Chemistry- Algebra II Concurrent and Biology
Physics A (I)- Pre-Calc Concurrent and Chemistry
AP Physics B (II)- Physics I, AP Calculus AB
AP Physics C (III)- Physics I, II, AP Calculus BC
AP Env. Science- Chemistry I
AP English Lang- English II
AP English Lit- AP English Lang or English III
AP Computer Science- Algebra I
AP US Government- World Geography
AP Calculus AB- Pre-Calculus/Trig
AP Calculus BC- AP Calculus AB/Teacher Approval
Linear Algebra- AP Calculus BC/Teacher Approval
Multivariable Calculus- Linear Algebra/AP Calculus BC/Teacher Approval
AP Statistics- AP Calculus AB or BC Concurrent
AP European History- World Geography

We technically have pre-reqs, but counselors and teachers end up not caring which equals students in AP classes just for a GPA boost, which in turn equals a TERRIBLE AP pass rate.

AP Calc AB or BC requires having already completed Precalc (whether honors or regular). APUSH is technically a sophomore class and AP Gov a junior one, but those rules are waived on an individual basis. It is recommended that we take regular chem before AP Chem, for example, but a lot of students ignore that rule.

Reading the policies of other schools, I’m kinda glad I go to the school that I do lol.

My school doesn’t really have any prerequisites for classes; you can take AP Biology if you haven’t taken biology yet &c. Almost all of the classes are done by grade level, though. (e.g. biology is a mainly sophomore class, US History for juniors)

For math classes, you’re pretty much on a track, but you can skip ahead by self-studying or taking a course at the local community college.
