when high school students keep track of all their community service hours.. all the way to the last single digit. i mean, for whose sake are you doing it for? it should be called self service hours instead of community service hours.

Some schools have requirements that must be met. My daughter's does.

Some programs do, as well. IB Diploma...

Yeah I agree, it doesnt bother me more then people who mention hours when they talk about what they have done. First of all at any degree of work its still vole entering and time on that project doesnt make a difference in importance. Also, are you doing the service for the better of society and yourself or you doing it just for the hours? That changes the entire point, theres a difference between wanting to do something and having to do it. You cant log most of the things you truly get out of doing service to others why mention hours.

I might take some heat for saying this, but I'm happy that people volunteer to boost their college applications .I'd rather have them volunteering with bad reasons/motives than not volunteering at all. As an economist might say, it's all about the right incentives . . .

I don't keep track of a damn thing. I tutor alot for physics/math, but I never record it so on my app I simply put about 2 hrs a week at minimum.

It does irritate me! A lot! And yeah, it's better to do it for stupid reasons than not at all, but it's even better to do it for good reasons. And besides, there are ways to serve the community that you can't record hours for, like helping someone through a difficult time or giving your friend a ride every day, or just being a good, nice person and making people happy. I know plenty of jerks who volunteer a lot and record those hours and get into ivies and cackle and never assist another human being as long as they live.

When I tutor or volunteer at the library or for the township we have to sign in and out. If we want to know how many hours we have, they count it themselves.

yeah, it kind of bugs me when i see ppl with "254 hours comm service at local hospital" or something. even tho it's good their volunteering. just a little irksome that they count the hours.

perhaps they will all become lawyers who bill in 6-minute increments.
