Doing Pre-Med After College

I am currently a first year at UCLA and I initially came in under a Biology major however Psychology has really caught my interest. I am more inclined to do Psychology as my major then anything else however I would still like to go to Medical school.

I know I could complete the prereqs and my psych major and then apply to medical school. However that would take away from my enjoyment of Psychology and possibly hurt my GPA. Plus I have not matured as a student and taking classes that require a great deal of work are definitely something I don't want to do know.

So my plans are, after I complete my degree, I will then start doing the pre-reqs for medical school. However, where would I go to complete the pre-reqs for med school after I have graduated from college. I can't go to community college because I have heard that going to a JC is frowned upon my med adcoms who look at your Science GPA.

So what should I do?

you can take your prerequisites at UCLA after you graduate.

So I can go to any university, enroll in the classes there and knock out my requirements.

I plan on doing an entire year of Bio, since I am really interested in biological aspect, so that would only leave me with a year of math, physics, and chemistry.

A friend's son graduated last year with a "War and Peace" major. He is now picking up prereqs for med school and will apply when those are done. Another friend of mine worked as an engineer for several years, then went back and picked up the classes he needed, took the MCAT, and went to med school.

Did they complete the requirements at their local university?

The first one is doing his at his undergraduate university. The one that was an engineer did his undergrad at Berkley and picked up the needed courses at a school in the east (they had relocated by then).

Since I am ignorant and aware of the process. So after anyone has graduated from a university, they have the option of going back to any school. So I am originally from San Diego, so after four years of my undergrad, I return to San Diego, and I just go to UCSD or SDSU and complete my pre-reqs.

But wouldn't I have to go through the admissions process all over again. Do you just show up at the school and say, I need to fulfill the med-school reqs. Won't they ask you to fill out an application and wait to be accepted into the school?

I am lost!!

You will have to apply and be admitted to these post-bac programs in order to fulfill your premed prereqs. Unless of course you stay at UCLA. I know my undergrad, Cornell, will let you pay by the unit to take courses after you've graduated.

What I don't understand is why you can't do both the psych major and the premed courses at the same time. The premed prereqs consist of just 4-5 courses. You should have plenty of time to take them since you'll be taking many courses outside of your major.

if i were you, major in psychobiology. it is better than psych cause you finish all the prereqs for med school and you get a ton of psych (same psych classes as the psych students). Many premeds interested in psych major in psychobiology.
