Donner Best for Athlete?

Hello. I'm trying to decided what dorm i want to live in, and I'm wondering if Donner is the best dorm for athletes (specifically football players). I've heard things about a smell from garbage? Anyway any insight is appreciated!

And when is the housing papers available or are they already available?

Donner is close to the athletic facilities, which would be handy. I’ve never heard any complaints about the smell of garbage in the dorm, although there is an area with some dumpsters outside Donner. Donner is nice location-wise, and the rooms are decently large, but it’s somewhat old. I’m not at what point they allow you to make your housing selection, but as long as you’ve made your deposit you’re fine.

Much better than the other side of campus (Morewood, Mudge). You will be a few steps from the football locker rooms really. Not sure if that’s good or bad, though (haha).

Your question evokes nostalgia for my own time at CMU. I was an athlete (football) in late 1970’s and I lived my first two years in Donner (A-33). At that time, the dorm actully looked out on the old field, now replaced by Gesling Stadium and the new dorms, and it was situated at about 90 degrees from the orientation of the current field and track. Best of luck to you.

I’m pretty sure being an athlete has just about nothing to do with what dorm you pick. It is true that Donner is the closest to the football fields, but we’re talking like 5-10 extra minutes of walking from the farther dorms on Morewood or the Residence on Fifth. If I were you, I wouldn’t worry about that facet very much, and I would pick your dorm based on other factors.

Donner is right by some dumpsters, which basically makes one rarely used back staircase smell like garbage a lot of the time. While non-Donner people will often make fun of Donner for “smelling like garbage,” in reality it’s not a big deal.
