Don't know if you guys have any but pls can you give me your opinions: CMC vs. Barnar

Ok I’m confused now…

Claremont McKenna College (CA) or Barnard College (NY)

My heart and gut feeling tells me Barnard’s the one… It’s my fate… But I don’t knowww I’m confusedd!!!

My parents want me to “think” about it…
If anyone knows about both colleges, please reply!

Okay, getting a LITTLE intense again... It's just a school! They're both just schools, and they're both fantastic!

CMC has the weather and scenery on its side, Barnard has NYC. CMC has the other Claremont Colleges (but not as easy access), Barnard has Columbia. CMC's a lot smaller (less than half Barnard's size). I thiiiink CMC's a lot more professional oriented than Barnard.

It all comes down to what you want college to be like. They're both great educations, they're both pretty on your resume. Barnard's name will probably go farther in the northeast, CMC's out west.

Ok,, barnard it is then..

I would disagree with primefactor re: lack of easy access to other schools. The schools are all within 10 minutes walking distance from each other (and that's from the far edge of Harvey Mudd to the edge of Pomona - CMC is across the street from Pomona, Scripps, and Pitzer). Additionally, they are situated in such a way that it is incredibly easy to access the resources of another college. I go to parties at Pomona, CMC, and Mudd all of the time, take science classes through CMC, and am doing a Human Biology major through Pomona and Pitzer - to top it off, I'm a Scripps student! Cross-registration is a breeze and there is a population of upwards of 5000 students through the five colleges plus CGU (the graduate university) and the Claremont School of Theology. I would say that your main concern would be whether you wanted to be in a big city or in a suburb, whether you want a women's college or not, and what your intended career goals are (CMC is great for politics, econ, IR, law, public policy, and good in most other areas). I don't know much about Barnard's strengths or weaknesses, only that it is also a phenomenal school. Good luck with making your decision! You can't go wrong.

I didn't say it wasn't easy access, just not AS easy access. You can take classes at Columbia without going through special procedures and they're even all listed together on the class directory, so you don't have to look around to see everything that's offered. It's just like the classes are offered by one big university (which in essence, they are).

THanks very much for your comments zeusviolin, they were very helpful :)

At this point, I've already decided on Barnard 100% and I think for all the right reasons.

I want to double major in English literature and Art History, and as I know it, Barnard is stronger for these than CMC.
Like you said CMC is great for politics, IR, econs etc.... something I am not planning on going into.
Career wise, I'm looking into journalism, advertizing, curating (art galleries, museums), and jobs related to art, or maybe even fine arts.. I mean I'm leaving everything open and don't know exactly where I'm going, but NYC and Barnard seem more of a place for me.

As for whether I want to be in a big city or a suburb.. I've lived in big cities all my life, and I can't imagine living in suburbia (not just yet anyway hehe).

So yup.. Barnard it is.. And I really have thought about it carefully. THanks again though :) And CMC sounds awesome hehe!!
