Don't know what major to pursue?

This year I'll be a junior. I want to get into a top college and am trying to gear my extracurriculars toward a specific major (right now I swim, play the violin, etc...I'm well rounded and not focused on anything)

This is part of the problem of why I don't know what I want to be. My parents are both engineers and have been pushing me toward engineering. My mom says I have math and science talents that should not be wasted.

Although I enjoy and excel in math and science, I don't really fit the personality type for engineering. I don't do robotics and I don't love coding or taking things apart, and I never wonder why something works, etc. Plus, I've fallen in love with some of the Ivies that are not known for engineering.

OK the following may come across as snotty and selfish and etc., but I'm really trying to be honest and convey my true self.

All I know about myself is that I love competition and trying to become the best, I love debating and asserting my opinion and, as shallow as this sounds, the only things I know i want in my future are to live a high class life and travel a lot.

Thank you for any advice you can give me.

Would you be interested in finance-related careers? They can be competitive and make good money, especially if you were to become an actuary or something. According to Forbes, 93% of actuaries interviewed said that their schedules were flexible enough to accommodate travelling. And they involve math, so if you’re good at it, that’s something to look into.

If you want to stay away from math, you could look into a career in law and major in something like Political Science or International Relations. Depending on the type of job you get, though, you could have a big workload.

You could become a doctor. That is a very competitive and high-paying field, but you’d have to secure a job that would let you travel, because many doctors don’t have much free time, especially early in their careers.

Finally, you could look into civil engineering. It’s less robots and technology and more surveying and designing. And they make good money, I believe. My uncle is a civil engineer and he’s always travelling for his work, and gets a lot of free time to go sight-seeing.

You’ll have more flexibility in your choices if you look for careers that aren’t just well-paying and let you travel, but also careers that are generally well-paying so you can travel?

Based on the fact that you like debating and are opinionated, it sounds like a career in law, political science, or journalism may fit you. Based on the fact that you would like to travel, maybe international relations or politics would be interesting.

Good luck in your search for a major!

thank you! your post helped me a lot
