Don't know what to pursue job-wise as a Junior in CS

Hey everyone,

I’m a Junior in a Computer Science program, majoring in CS and minoring in Mathematics. But, I honestly don’t know what I want to do with it. Originally I was an engineering major, but I took an introduction to Python and discovered that I really enjoyed the problem solving involved with computer science… so I switched majors a year from graduation.

Prior to my Python course, I really had no experience programming. When I was younger (I’m 29), I messed around with making websites for clans/guilds/blogs (before dedicated blog sites existed). I made some scenarios for Age of Empires II (which I didn’t know used programming concepts until I took Python), and I also made mods for Medal of Honor Allied Assault, but that just involved going into some pk3 files and changing variables.

I’m finishing data structures this semester, which means I have mostly electives left – and all of the electives open up to me after this class. I say this to indicate that I really don’t know WHAT is available for CS majors. I know obvious ones like programming, software engineering, etc. But I want to narrow down a path. I plan on working on campus this coming semester as an SI, and then seeking internships for the coming year.

In terms of extracurricular things that I enjoy, it really just consists of playing video games. I’ve played them since I was 3 starting on MS DOS. But I know this doesn’t mean I would enjoy programming games…

I was also looking into cybersecurity jobs, but I’m not sure if this is a good idea with all the certs, etc. needed at my age. I really just want to finish my degree and get a job outside of retail.

Any suggestions?

I would consider looking into things like web development and mobile app development. There are a good deal of jobs and a good variety of companies in those areas, and won’t require additional certification or the hypercompetitiveness of the gaming industry.

Data science and maybe even AI could also be an interesting route to explore.
