my daughter had a single room ( didnt even request it) for three years
Worked well for her- senior year she moved to a 2 bedroom townhouse
THe school may have decided she had a medical necessity ( ADD)

D got her assigment at Northeastern - a suite style dorm, 3 girls in her b-room, 2 in a smaller b-room, shared common area & bathroom -- complete with names & email addresses of her future roommates. They're already in touch, and will soon divvy up who brings what. She's the only one from the west, the other girls are all from the MA/NY/NJ area, so D already announced "I'm not lugging any huge stuff cross-country with the rest of you driving distance from school." No problem asserting herself here...

superwizard et al, the resi life people often say shared rooms are best for first-years so they'll make friends sooner, and that's probably true for most. Unfortunately, resi life people, and student services people in general, tend to be extroverts -- that's why they're in that line of work. The rules are being made by folks who don't get it. For the introverts of the world, all that camaraderie is exhausting.

I should be getting my housing info any day now (today it was a tease, they sent me this big envelope about health insurance but i thought it was my assignment!) So I get my infoa little less than 1.5 months before move in!

My college says I should get mine mid-month. My best friend got her info from a state school in late May! That is the earliest I have ever heard of!

It's been three years since I was in this situation myself, but the incoming MIT frosh make preliminary rankings of dorms in June based on printed and video information sent to them by the dorms. They find out their "temp" assignment, based on those preliminary rankings, in late July. During their first few days of Orientation, they are given time to visit the different dorms in person and hang out with the upperclass residents. After that, they can choose either to stay in their temp dorm (but not their temp room) or create a new ranking of preferences based on their in-person experiences. Once they've been assigned a dorm, there's a designated night where most dorms allow them to visit the different sections of the dorm and rank their preferences - after that night, they are given their housing assignment and the upperclassmen help them move their stuff from their temp room into their new room.

My daughter (who will be at Earlham) got her dorm assignment and name and contact info for her roommate several weeks ago. In her case the roommate was no surprise since she requested someone (a friend that she met at a summer program and has kept in touch with).

My older daughter (who just finished her freshman year at Earlham) got her roommate assignment mid-June last year. She and her roommate contacted each other and things seemed to be going well. My oldest is very shy and very much an introvert so getting a chance to know her roommate was great. Unfortunately it didn't work out. Her roommate changed her plans a couple weeks before the start of school and didn'y end up attending Earlham. My daughter was given a new roommate (but didn't find out who until she moved in). The new roommate was a third year student. She obviously wasn't there for orientation, so my daughter didn't have anyone then and when she showed up she already had a big circle of friends and wasn't interested in helping out a new student.

katliamom, we are in CA and my son is also going to NEU. In honors dorm, sounds like that's where your DD is too. Loved the whole, getting all the information on 7/15. He has been "talking" with almost all of the group through facebook. Have their own page set up for their suite, etc. Really makes the transition easier...(for me anyway, lol).

ebeee -- has your son gotten his letter about the mandatory online drinking course? That had me smiling, my daughter rolling her eyes.

Actually D is not in honors dorm -- but she lucked out and got in the FORMER honors dorm, so same set up -- the new honors dorm (West Hall, is it?) looks gorgeous!

Heh, I got the alcohol course thing too. I can start it sometime in mid-July, which will actually be a good distraction from summer for a while.

I'll supposedly find out from St. Anselm College in late July (they said they'll mail them during the third week of July, assuming 16th-23rd, and I live within two mailing days).

I laughed at your dorm room theme contest post...lol...

This is my first one off to college(D) we just started collecting dorm stuff.
It did not hit me till we got a packet from school w/ official check-in day info. that she really is leaving. Aug 28th. Exciting and sentimental too. This year went fast.

We got a clever college ad from Target that lists every single thing they sell that could be remotely needed by a college student. My son started paging through it and said, "Oh my gosh, I need all this stuff??" Not that he needs all that stuff but he thought we could just get some bedding, a tv, computer that he owns and he'd be good to go.
