So how much room would there be to have a desktop/monitor, laptop, printer, and speaker system in a dorm room? And, as far as I know you get two ethernet ports, one for you and one for your room mate. How would I connect to the internet simultaneously on my laptop and desktop? I'm assuming I'll need a router but someone I talked to today at Bestbuy said I wouldn't need one and the laptop will always have a wireless connection, even in the dorms. I'm not sure how true that it. Enlighten me?

It depends on where you are and how you organize your stuff. It saves a lot of space if you put your printer on the floor under your desk. You really only need one computer, but if you want to bring both kinds, expect your desk to be crowded. You need to register your computer’s ethernet address to your port, so you won’t be able to use both computers to connect to the internet at the same time in your room. The dorms in North have wireless, I believe some in South do, and there are plans to get it in all of South and Pollock soon. It’s only supposed to be in common areas like lounges, but I’ve gotten it in rooms in North occasionally.

Thanks that helped. I won’t be staying in North or South so I don’t really have to consider that. I guess I can live with only one accessing the internet at the time, would have been nice but I can live without it. And I’m pretty set on bringing both with me, I can deal with it being a bit crowded, my printers sitting under my desk on top of my bass as it is. That’s another question, can you have a bass in your dorm playing through the day? Think it’ll cause a lot of complaints?

Dude, get the apple airport express. It will change your life. Mine has lasted through 5 years and 4 apartments. It does wireless printing to your printer, music to you speakers and your wireless internet for a laptop, PS3, xbox, whatever, just password it because its the dorms.

Oh,yea. I just remembered that accessing the internet in college dorms is unnecessarily difficult. The router probably wont work.

That reminds me I’m also going to have an xbox 360 that’s going to need ethernet for xbox live. This is where I thought a router would come especially in hand.

Just buy a wired router so you canhace Internet on everything but aren’t you scared something willngrt stolen? And you don’t need a laptop and a desktop just but a monitor that you can hook your laptop up to.

It might get crowded for you to have both computer systems. Most kids just use their laptops (for some classes, you can bring a laptop with you). As others have said, only certain dorms have wireless they keep saying it’s going to be expanded to more dorms, but that seems to be going slowly.

I don’t think you’ll be able to have your 360 and computer online at the same time my kids use both, but they have to alternate which one (the laptop or the 360) is actually online at a given time.

On a related note, if you do a lot of downloading especially of game-related stuff - keep in mind that you have a weekly bandwidth limit, and PSU does keep track. My sons know some kids who exceeded their limit and didn’t realize it until it was too late, so that’s something you need to keep an eye on.

Yeah the limit can be a pain sometimes. Luckily they increased the bandwidth limit from 4GB to 10GB this school year.

What do they do when you exceed your bandwidth limit? It’s going to be annoying having to alternate which device I use internet on but I guess I’ll have to deal.

The first two times you go over 10 GB, they give you 56k for the rest of the week. The third time, they give you 56k for the rest of the semester. If you go over again, they shut off your internet connection for the rest of the semester. It really is hard to go over 10 GB a week, unless you’re playing on xbox live or something like that. If you go over, you can always use the computer labs and you’ll be able to get regular speed there.

live won’t take you over unless you download a lot of games/add-ons in one week. My roommates play COD2 for hours on end and have yet to receive a warning.
