I know I'm going to be stuck with an 8 a.m. class 3x week first semester, but I put on my original form that I like to sleep in, so chances are I'm going to get someone who is also not a morning person. So, do I just say, sorry, I'm gonna have this alarm clock going off early, and hope the roomate can get back to sleep or is there some alternative to wake me up without annoying my roomate?

Also, any other suggestions on rooming with someone -- I'm an only child so this will be my first experience sharing ANYTHING.

Things will just work out. I put on my application that I'm a late night person. My room mate went to bed every night at 9pm. And he got up really early, like 6am. I didn't. I studied in the lounge a lot. Then I found out (like in Nov) that lights and noises don't bother him because he shared a room at home.
I never shared a bedroom or bath until I went to Cal last year. Things will work out. Open communication when you get there is suggested. :)

yah it'll work out, there's not much you can do other than tell ur roommate that u have an 8am class. maybe offer to take the bottom bunk so you don't have to climb all over the bed and wake them up.

The form is really vague and people don't put too much thought into it. As for getting up early, what I've seen is either, your alarm goes off, wakes both you and your roommate, you get up and she goes back to sleep, or another option is, you put your alarm clock (many people use cell phones) on vibrate, although that might not wake YOU up.

Keep your part of the room clean, offer to share your food whenever you can, clean shared appliances (fridge, etc) together, be willing to do small favors every now and then, and don't monopolize the space.

v. helpful info, thanks all who responded. I think I'm pretty easy to live with but ya never know.
