The offices got moved last summer, and that space was changed into freshman doubles. ResLife and all of those things are now located in Grad Center E.

When will incoming freshman fill out the questionnaire that Brown uses to assign roommates?

Thanks

I just went back in my Brown email account and found the relevant email. In 2011, it was sent on 6/11. Starting in June, the Brown freshman advising office basically sent a weekly email with reminders about important things. No need to worry about forgetting something!

Thank you for the help

Bump! Class of 2018!!
One question: How strict is the fridge rule (4.0 cu ft. limit)? We bought one that is 4.4 cu ft…should we return it for a smaller size?

My son has the same question. Except we found a fridge that is 110 watts and the website says 100 watt limit

No one’s going to be picky about your fridge - dorm inspections generally just look for prohibited things (fire hazards, etc).

Thank you; I figured there are worse dorm rules that can be broken than a slightly too-large fridge!

Also, in planning for fridges, microwaves, bean bag chairs, etc.: BSA has a voucher program with College Storage that allows you to store up to 8 large items for $30. DS split with a friend–he stored 4 items, friend stored 4, each paid $15 for the whole summer. DS got a large moving box from a local friend, and stuffed his bean bag chair, some winter items and bedding into the box. Got another smaller box to store his printer, paper, hangers, and other room accessories in. Then, stored his bedside table and fridge and only had to check one bag for his trip home (which was free because he’s a FF on Delta). We just paid an additional $10 to have College Storage deliver his storage stuff to his room before move-in. So, for $25, he has everything from last year stored then delivered to his room before he arrives (it’s free to meet College Storage in front of the dorms somewhere, stand in line, and drag the stuff upstairs to your room, but SO worth the $10 to have it delivered IMO). Anyway, just wanted you to know that if you want to buy some things and hold onto them for next year, it’s easy to do with College Storage.

Sounds like a great idea!

I heard you can just mail stuff to your PO box address and Brown will hold it for you for free until you arrive. Is there a specific range of dates when this service is available?

This is true year-round. However, the lines last year were really long to pick things up. There have been some fairly major changes in the mail room this summer. Unsure what the affects of the changes will be. DS is out of the country, so I can’t ask him for clarifications on what I am about to tell you, so if this is not absolutely accurate for this year, I hope someone will correct it. But last year, I believe all of the parcels were sent to a larger building more on the edge of campus for distribution (as opposed to Wilson, where mail goes during the year). The lines were long, and the walk to many of the dorms was quite far with a bulky, heavy box. I made two runs from that building with hall mates of DS who had shipped things ahead. Other students had dollies or cars to transport the boxes to their dorms. So, I would:

1) call ahead and find out where the parcel will be distributed
2) make certain that, no matter where the parcel is delivered, your student has a way to get it back to the dorm.
3) set aside an hour or so for the round trip.

For reference on time, I would suggest you think about the Post Office at Christmas. It’s pretty much like that. You just have channel your Christmas spirit in September. ;)

I believe you can get dollies from the housing office, if that helps.

And if anyone here needs to transport heavy boxes and has no parental assistance or access to a car, PM me. I might be able to find you help.

AntiEntropy: If you are staying at a hotel in Providence and renting a car, you might just want to ship a box to your hotel. That is what we did and avoided the lines at the post office at Brown. We stayed at the Renaissance and were not the only people to do this. I got the tip from another parent. I do envy you about to start this journey. My son graduated in May after a great four years and I was just looking on this website for old times sake.

Bumping up for incoming class of 2019! Any new advice for incoming students. Particularly for students coming from abroad?
