Freshman dorm needs question

Does anyone at CC know how warm/cold the freshman dorms are inside? DS will be living at New Pembroke, and we are wondering if he should bring his down comforter for cold nights, or if the building is overheated, making that unnecessary?

Also, how comfortable are the beds? Is he likely to need a board underneath the mattress to help firm up a sagging mattress, or an “egg crate” type foam layer under his sheets to make it more comfortable? I know I sound like an obsessive mom, but we’re just trying to pack up for the road trip across country, and are trying to think ahead… Thanks!

It depends on the room, even within the same dorm. I lived in East Andrews, and my room got so much sunlight, we turned on the heat maybe 3 times all year. On the other hand, the room next to us had the heat on all winter (though to be fair, they were from Washington DC and California, respectively, so they weren’t used to the cold).

The beds would be made comfortable by one of those foam layers…I actually used two (people commented on how comfortable my bed was). I don’t think one would need a board, though.

I agree with the beds. I did a summer program for 2 weeks, and the bed was very thin and firm.

Yes it depends on the room. I was in pembroke and rarely needed to use the heater, but my friends below had to play WoW all day to get the extra heat from the laptops :D

Better safe than sorry! Luckily there was already a board under my bed when I got there, and otherwise I would’ve been sunk.

And in the middle of the winter, a whole row of rooms lost heat… This might’ve been because I lived in the oldest dorm on campus, but, again, better safe than sorry.

If you ask facilities for a bed board they will make/get you one.

my apologies for living in NP, lol. Nah, ain’t that bad.

Get a piece of plywood for underneath the bed (which you can buy and get cut to size at home depot) and some memory foam for on top (i recommend walmarts memory foam, cheap and very good). If youd on’t like your mattress, you can ask facilities for a different one. They are very nice (facilities…not the mattresses).

Don’t bring too much stuff, beyond what fits nicely in your car. You’ll see what you need once you see your room. It’s hard to judge without that. There are walmarts, bed bath adn beyonds, and targets in the area.
If sleep is a big issue for you, like it is for me, look for a closeout at Macys or Craigslist. There is bed storage.
Bring your comforter

You know I haven’t been on here in a long while but it looks like people are about as aware as ever. I post something about how to get a free piece of wood and it’s immediately followed with instructions to go buy one. Ehh.

Also, you CAN swap your mattress but you’ll only get one of two kinds (hopefully the one lined with plastic). Expect marginal results or a possible downgrade.
