I am going to Westfield State University as a freshman this fall. I am still undecided on whether to dorm or commute. Students that dorm cant have cars and there isnt a ton to do in Westfield so I would be stuck on campus all the time. I can get there from my house in less than 30 minutes I don't mind the idea of living with my parents for a few more years. (Cheaper, food and laundry) I want to have a part time job so I'll need to be able to leave campus. I can see myself sticking around campus after class to use the gorgeous library to study and would hopefully have a car so I could go back and forth for different campus events. However I am still worried about the social effect this will have even though I am not a party person. It just seems easier to commute since because of all the financial aid I got I would just have to pay for supplies books and gas.

Plus I dont want to dorm and be paired with a bunch of psychos

A lot of freshmen make friends in the dorms, so you might not get to be as social if you’re living at home. You’d be a 20 minute drive away, in the dorms it’d be a 2 minute walk to see your friends.

Generally speaking roommates aren’t too bad… and learning to live with someone is a good skill to have. Sure, there are roommate horror stories on here, but you really only hear about the bad ones; the people with good (or okay) matches aren’t going to be on here ranting about it. If you do get a crazy roommate, there should be an option to switch anyways.

The usual advice on here is to go for the dorms, assuming cost isn’t a big issue.

My main issue is that since they dont allow cars for people living on campus that I am just going to be stuck there all the time which will be a problem if I get a job like I plan to.

I want to be able to have the freedom to do stuff outside campus. They have a bus that goes into Springfield but that sounds like a pain.

It seems like you want to commute. Go ahead. Plenty of people do it. In fact, you can see that it’s quite a [url=http://nsse.iub.edu/pdf/commuter.pdf]common experience/url.
