Dorm Room insurance?

The coverage is often an issue too – most homeowner’s insurance doesn’t cover you for accidental damage (someone stepped on your iphone, spilled liquid in your laptop, etc.) whereas the dorm policies like CSI, NSSI etc. do cover that (or at least do offer that coverage)

Not to mention the fact that making a claim on your homeowners insurance can result in higher premiums. Some companies might even drop you. I’d much rather pay ~ $100 a year for $5000 in coverage and know that I got accidental damage coverage, full replacement cost coverage and extremely quick reimbursement, while leaving my homeowners insurance untouched.

Really depends on your deductible on your homeowners as well.
Our homeowners covers our students stuff yet the deductible is 2500

With all the things that go on in college, it is likely that something will happen to a student’s laptop or other possessions accidentally just due to the nature of college life. It’s definitely worth getting a policy, especially one with a $25 deductible, to cover students’ possessions just in case

Has anyone dealt with both CSI and NSSI and can recommend one over the other? Any major differences between them or something we should be investigating to make a decision?

I wish we had bought it before my son’s macbook took a dive from the upper bunk when he was a sophomore.

$700 later in repairs, and I then purchased a policy. Never had to use it, but figured it would be useful just in case.

Will be purchasing a policy once D goes to college.

also (hate posting this but something to consider) if you are a cosigner on any college loans or expect to be… get a cheap term insurance on the student for the amount you calculate you will cosign over the 4 years…in the event of a tragedy… you will still be responsible for those loans. a term policy is cheap at this age.

We’ve had CSI for 3 years now. Just filed our first claim. Laptop fell and did some internal damage to the screen. No problem in getting payment for repair.

parent56 - Wells Fargo recently changed their policy on student loans w/ cosigner such that the loans will be forgiven in case of the student’s death or permanent disability:

Don’t know if other lenders have followed suit.

good to know momcat2… would be a good thing to check with lender.

I signed up today w/NSSI only because they had a preferred tracking software company. CSI on the other hand offered complimentary Identity theft coverage (didn’t investigate). Otherwise they seem similar. If I really wanted to dig deeper I would have compared their underwriters. Both companies seem to have good reviews here on CC.

We decided to not use a ‘renters policy’ rider on our homeowners because it was more expensive and it may have been a ding if we needed to submit a claim. This way the kid’s issues are separate from ours.

It would be a good idea to look into liability for your kid in case they do damage to someone else’s property.
